    House of Commons
    Parliament

Our coverage of a busy afternoon in the Commons will begin at 2.30pm with questions to the Justice Secretary, David Gauke.

This will be followed by three urgent questions. The first, to be introduced by Labour MP Melanie Onn, is about the quality of UK food labelling to prevent allergy-related deaths.

Next, shadow health secretary Jon Ashworth will ask a question on the NHS waste scandal and the accumulation of hundreds of tonnes of dangerous waste, and then Labour MP Kate Osamor will ask about plans to use private investments towards 0.7% of international aid.

Following the urgent questions, an update will be given on Brexit through the one ministerial statement by Dominic Raab, the Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union.

After this, a ten minute rule motion on assaults on retail workers will be introduced by Labour MP Alex Norris. This will be followed by two backbench debates; one on baby loss awareness week, introduced by Conservative MP Antoinette Sandbach, and one on children's social care, introduced by Conservative MP Tim Loughton.

The Home Affairs Committee is meeting to discuss migration after the UK leaves the EU.

A report from the committee previously said that the government should engage in “open debate” over migration policy in the run up to the withdrawal agreement from the EU. It warned that some could seek to “exploit” or “escalate” tensions over immigration.

The committee criticised the government’s failure to build consensus on the matter, and it also said the government still had not produced a valid migration policy two years after the EU referendum.

The Committee also found that the government meeting its self-imposed net migration target of tens of thousands, for EEA nationals, is not working and should be replaced.

The report said there is a range of options available for significant immigration reform after the UK leaves the EU, but said that so far, the UK has not opted to take measures which are possible during the transition period.

While we wait for business in the main chamber, you can watch debates in Westminster Hall - the Commons' second debating chamber - now. Just use the tab at the top of this page.

What's on today? Well, currently, it's a debate on the future of the oil and gas industry.

    Then:

We'll be covering those last two debates in a little more detail.

  5. Good afternoonpublished at 12:28 British Summer Time 9 October 2018

Welcome back to our coverage of Parliament, as most MPs and peers return from party conferences.

Of course, the SNP conference is still going on in Glasgow today, but the Commons is returning to business.

First on the agenda for MPs today, at 2.30pm, is the question session with justice ministers. In the Lords, peers are questioning government ministers in the daily oral questions session at 2.30pm.

And we'll be covering that and plenty more as this week. Thanks for joining us.
