    Theresa May's 15:30 GMT statement entitled Exiting the EU will be followed by Leader of the Commons Andrea Leadsom announcing changes to parliamentary business for the days ahead. Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay will then make a statement to MPs on the Article 50 process.

    MPs had been expecting to vote on the Brexit withdrawal agreement which set out how the UK would leave the EU.

    The agreement:

    • States that if no long-term trade deal has been agreed by the end of 2020 that avoids a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and if there is no extension to the transition period, then a backstop consisting of "a single customs territory between the (European) Union and the United Kingdom" will be triggered.
    • Establishes a transition period (which the UK government calls "implementation period") begins on 29 March 2019 and lasts until 31 December 2020.
    • Sets out the calculations for the financial settlement (or "divorce bill") that the UK will need to pay to the EU to settle all of its obligations - expected to be at least £39bn.

    The pound fell sharply in response to the news, shedding 0.5% against the US dollar to stand at $1.26. Against the euro, the pound was 0.8% down at 1.10.

  11. Key Brexit vote set to be delayedpublished at 13:06 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2018

    At 15:30 GMT Prime Minister Theresa May is expected to delay Tuesday's vote on her Brexit deal, in a statement to MPs.

    There has been no official confirmation, but the BBC's Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg has been told by three cabinet sources that the delay will be announced.

    MPs were due to vote on the withdrawal agreement, reached by the prime minister with the EU. However, the plans faced opposition across the House of Commons.
