Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn says he has "lost count" of the number of times the PM has come to the Commons "to explain a further delay".

"By the umpteenth time, it can only be described as grotesquely reckless," he states, adding that the PM is "stringing people along".

The Withdrawal Agreement is not being reopened and there will be no unilateral exit from the backstop, he says.

"The road is running out, and the consequences of running down the clock is evident and very real for industry" and for people's jobs, he adds.

  2. May: 'Corbyn has gone back on his promise'published at 12:53 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2019

    Brexit statement

    House of Commons
    Parliament

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has gone back on his promise to respect the referendum result and wants to hold a "divisive referendum" that would "take our country back to square one", Mrs May says.

Labour voters who voted for Brexit "will rightly be appalled" and that "the credibility of our democracy is at stake," she adds.

Concluding her speech, Mrs May says she hopes tomorrow MPs can show that with legally binding changes and a determination to address wider concerns of those who voted to leave, there will be a deal that can be supported.

  4. 'Our absolute focus should be on working to get a deal'published at 12:51 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2019

    Brexit statement

    House of Commons
    Parliament

"Let me be clear, I do not want to see Article 50 extended, our absolute focus should be on working to get a deal and leaving on the 29 March," Mrs May states.

She says an extension beyond June would mean the UK participating in EU Parliament elections, asking "what kind of message" that would send to Leave voters.

"An extension cannot take no deal off the table," she says, stating that the only way to avoid no deal is to agree a deal or revoke Article 50.

The Commons "can only bring people together" once it has delivered "the vote of the British people".

She says she hopes the "government efforts" will give EU citizens in the UK "the reassurances they need and deserve".

Theresa May says the government is today publishing the paper assessing the UK's readiness for no deal.

"If we have to, we will ultimately make a success of no deal," she says, but notes the paper is an "honest assessment of the serious challenges it would bring in the short-term".

Mrs May says the government will table an amendable motion today for debate tomorrow.

She adds that in the case of the government losing the next meaningful vote, she is today proposing three further commitments:

    • A second meaningful vote will be held by Tuesday, 12 March at the latest
    • If the deal is voted against, a second neutral amendable motion will be voted on asking MPs if they support leaving the EU without a deal by the 13 March - "The UK will only leave without the deal if there is explicit consent for that outcome"
    • If Parliament rejects a no-deal option, there will be another vote on whether there should be "a short limited extension of Article 50"

Prime Minister Theresa May has begun her statement in the Commons.

She says she had a "constructive meeting" with Jean-Claude Juncker on the legal changes that can be made to the Irish backstop to receive Commons approval.

She says she has spoken to the leaders of "every single EU state to explain the UK's position".

The UK and EU have agreed a "joint working group" to try and ensure that a hard border will not be necessary between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

"I know what this House needs in order to support an EU Withdrawal Agreement, the EU knows" too, she states.

"Taking back control cannot mean giving up control of these standards," she says referring to EU environmental protections, workers rights and health and safety.

The prime minister will shortly tell MPs that if they reject her deal on 12 March, there will be a vote by 13 March on whether UK will leave without a deal or not.

If Parliament rejects the idea of leaving without a deal, then there will be another vote on whether to extend Article 50, the BBC understands.

  16. Minister looking for 'more than warm words'published at 12:13 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2019

    Victoria Derbyshire

One of the Remain-supporting ministers threatening to rebel against the prime minister over the issue of Brexit is Business Minister Richard Harrington.

He's one of three ministers who have threatened to quit, external unless the PM agrees to take a no-deal exit off the table.

Speaking to the BBC earlier, he said he hopes the PM will say later that she'll "effectively rule out no deal", which he calls the "responsible thing to do".

"Warm words alone will not be enough, it has to be a clear undertaking that she is prepared to remove no deal, to have a short extension to Article 50", he added.
