    Quote Message

If the attorney general can clarify the situation such that - especially the Northern Ireland DUP MPs are happy to vote for the withdrawal agreement - it would bring a lot of people back to support it. It's clearly better to leave with a deal than without a deal.

  2. More MEP reaction to Brexit votepublished at 11:14 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2019

    European Parliament
    Strasbourg

Slovak conservative MEP Richard Sulik says the November Brexit deal is "dead", and the "only logical solution" is to prepare for a no-deal Brexit.

Poland's Danuta Huebner, who chairs the committee which will scrutinise the final Brexit deal, says an orderly withdrawal in two weeks "is not going to happen".

She says a short extension to Brexit talks "would only make sense with a positive meaningful vote, which is not the case any more".

A longer extension means a "longer period of uncertainty", she adds.

  12. Nick Boles: 'May should resign once deal is done'published at 10:45 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2019

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Tory MP Nick Boles, who has voted twice in favour of Theresa May's deal, tells BBC Radio 5 live that the prime minister "hasn’t allowed Parliament to explore what alternative compromises we might support".

"We’ve never been allowed to debate and vote on anything other than her deal," he says.

He calls Mrs May a "control freak" who has "very clear red lines".

He says the UK is a "laughing stock" with trading partners who "all have their heads in their hands".

Mr Boles says the PM needs to resign "as soon as" a Brexit deal is agreed.

"Not now because the government needs to be led," he says.

"The truth is we can't afford to take the time out to choose someone else.

"Should she go as soon as... the ink is dry on some deal? Absolutely.

"So I'm not in any sense a fan of her staying for any moment longer than necessary, but right now it is necessary that she continues to conduct these negotiations."

Italian social democrat Roberto Gualtieri, who sits on the European Parliament's Brexit steering group, says the PM's strategy of "appeasing" Brexiteers has "backfired spectacularly".

Mr Gualtieri, who belongs to the same centre-left political group as Labour's MEPs, adds that it was a "big mistake" not to try getting a deal through on a cross-party basis.

Norman Smith says Attorney General Geoffrey Cox has suggested the Vienna Convention could provide the UK with a unilateral way out of the backstop.

He says given that Mr Cox's advice was crucial to firming up Brexiteer opposition to Mrs May's deal yesterday, any softening could enable them to get back on board.

  17. Kent teacher: 'I am making sure we have enough toilet rolls'published at 10:40 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2019

    BBC Radio 5 Live

    Rob GayganImage source, Rob Gaygan

Rob Gaygan is a senior school leader at Towers School and Sixth Form Centre in Ashford, Kent. His school is 20 miles from Dover. He called 5 live's Your Call programme to talk about preparations he's making.

“I am currently not in school this morning because I am planning for a no-deal [Brexit] on the 29th to make sure that I’ve got enough toilet rolls in school, to make sure I’ve got enough paper in school.

"We have a number of staff that live down towards the coast, and should motorways and the road network become snarled, what percentage of my staff can actually get into school?

"I need to make sure that the school can run. We don’t have masses of room, so I need to make sure I’m ordering stuff.

"I need to make sure that my canteen can open. I need to make sure I know what proportion of students can walk [in].

"I am nine school weeks away from summer examinations, I’ve got a bunch of students, I am trying to get them to the big wide world and I’m spending time away from them.

"It’s not just me that’s doing this - we’ve been asked as a set of schools in and around this area, to make sure that we’re in a position that, ‘should the worst happen’, we can still operate a school."
