  1. 'Recipe for chaos'published at 12:00 Greenwich Mean Time 28 March 2019

Conservative MP Stephen Crabbe tells the BBC's Victoria Derbyshire programme: “We would have been leaving tomorrow had people rallied round and supported the prime minister.

“Instead what you’ve had is different groups of MPs all holding out for their own different versions of Brexit and that’s a recipe for chaos."

  2. Support for PM's deal in national interest - Lidingtonpublished at 11:55 Greenwich Mean Time 28 March 2019

    David LidingtonImage source, EPA

Theresa May's de facto deputy David Lidington says MPs should back the prime minister's Brexit deal “in the national interest".

Mr Lidington, speaking at the British Chambers of Commerce conference, says the alternative would be more division and uncertainty, adding that Wednesday's indicative votes in the House of Commons demonstrates there are “no easy, simple, options”.

He says there would be an “economic boost” should the deal be approved.

The “responsible course” was for MPs to support an orderly exit through the PM’s deal, he adds.

  10. Business leader critical of MPspublished at 11:21 Greenwich Mean Time 28 March 2019

Jobs are being lost and firms are going to the wall because of the "Brexit black hole" of uncertainty over the British economy, a business leader said.

In a speech at the BCC annual conference in London, director general Adam Marshall had this message for MPs:

"We are angry - you have let British business down. You have focused on soundbites, not substance, tactics not strategy, and politics not prosperity. Listening without hearing.

"And as a result, business communities in every part of the UK are still unsure about when the future starts, let alone what it holds.

"Three years, going round in circles. Ladies and gentlemen, three years is long enough. Too many critical questions ladies and gentlemen remain unanswered. No-one would run a business like this and it is no way to run a country."

  12. Truss: PM's deal allows UK to move forwardpublished at 11:14 Greenwich Mean Time 28 March 2019

    Liz TrussImage source, EPA

Cabinet minister Liz Truss has urged Tory and DUP MPs to back Theresa May's Brexit deal.

Speaking at the British Chambers of Commerce conference, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury says there is a "dawning realisation that the deal the prime minister has set out is the deal that will allow us to move forward as a country".

She adds: "The alternatives that have been proposed by Parliament, and we saw that in the House yesterday, do not command support, some of them aren't negotiable.

"What I want to do is strongly encourage colleagues of mine from the Conservative Party and other parties to back the prime minister's deal so we can get on with the next stage of negotiations which is the really important part of us being able to secure a good trade deal with the EU."

  18. European Research Group 'solid' in rejecting PM's dealpublished at 10:55 Greenwich Mean Time 28 March 2019

    Victoria Derbyshire

Members of the Tories' influential European Research Group are “solid - we’re not voting for the deal", says the Eurosceptic group's whip, Mark Francois.

He said Boris Johnson has made a “strategic error” in switching to support Theresa May’s Brexit agreement, although he added he "can’t speak for Boris” about why he did so.

“The withdrawal agreement means that we do not leave the European Union," he continued.

"I will never go through the lobbies of the House of Commons and surrender my country to anybody.”

  19. Europe papers 'appalled by Brexit chaos'published at 10:50 Greenwich Mean Time 28 March 2019

    European press front pages

Europe's papers say the prime minister's promise to quit if MPs back her Brexit deal - and the failure of Parliament to agree on any of the eight proposed alternatives - have plunged Britain deeper into paralysis.

In Germany, Die Welt says "Mrs May plays her last card - her own job".

Similarly Germany's Bild speaks of the "chaos becoming even more confusing" after MPs rejected all eight alternative Brexit proposals.

France's Le Figaro observes that Mrs May made a "Faustian pact" with Conservative MPs by offering to resign, but adds "on the other side of the Channel, Europeans are watching these developments with a feeling of weariness".
