    BBC News Channel

Andy McDonald MP on the BBC News Channel

Shadow transport secretary Andy McDonald said it was "difficult to really comprehend" how the result of tonight's votes can move forward on Monday.

The plan is to hold more indicative votes in Parliament on Monday.

Mr McDonald added: "But the bottom line is, the whole discussion today has been a private discussion amongst Tory MPs about who their next leader is going to be.

"That's been the focus and we simply cannot go on like this. We now need a general election to resolve this issue.

"We cannot go on with this Tory government stumbling from crisis to disaster."

Labour MP Dame Margaret Beckett says she did not expect any motion to carry a majority today.

"My understanding was we would first let 1,000 flowers bloom, and then we would see whether ranking things would make a difference," she says.

It was "extraordinary" for Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay to say the only thing left to do was to go ahead with the prime minister's deal, she adds.

    Point of Order

    House of Commons
    Parliament

Anna Soubry, who left the Conservatives to join the Independent Group, says "this is a 2 stage process - today was to see where the biggest support may be.

"A customs union got 264 votes and the biggest of all was a 'People's Vote'," she says, adding that both of these options received more votes than the prime minister's deal has on previous occasions.

"We go forward to Monday to find a compromise," she says.

"It is becoming increasingly obvious that the prime minister's deal needs to go back to the people," she adds.

He says the so-called "People's vote" got over 240 votes this evening, more votes than the prime minister's deal has got when it's been voted on.

"The only thing we should now be doing is going back to the people of the UK in a general election," he concludes.
