Speaking after the vote, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn says he would like to "congratulate" the House of Commons "for taking control".

Ministers, he says, must "take this process seriously".

MPs should consider a range of alternatives, including “whether any deal should be put to the people for a confirmatory vote”, he adds.

  4. Brexit department reacts to tonight's votepublished at 22:48 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2019

A spokesperson for the Brexit department has issued a statement following the defeat earlier on the Letwin amendment allowing MPs control of the parliamentary agenda on Wednesday:

“It is disappointing to see this amendment pass, as the government made a clear commitment to provide a process to find a majority in Parliament for a way forward this week.

“This amendment instead upends the balance between our democratic institutions and sets a dangerous, unpredictable precedent for the future.

“While it is now up to Parliament to set out next steps in respect of this amendment, the government will continue to call for realism – any options considered must be deliverable in negotiations with the EU.

Parliament should take account of how long these negotiations would take, and if they’d require a longer extension which would mean holding European Parliamentary elections.”

  15. What happens now?published at 22:28 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2019

Indicative votes will now be held on Wednesday on various Brexit options, in addition to Theresa May's deal, which could include:

    • Revoking Article 50 and cancelling Brexit
    • Another referendum
    • The PM's deal plus a customs union
    • The PM's deal plus both a customs union and single market access
    • A Canada-style free trade agreement
    • Leaving the EU without a deal

But BBC political correspondent Chris Mason points out that it's possible there'll be either a) no consensus for any one option or b) a majority in favour of an option that either the government or the EU find unacceptable.
