    Now, though, he says the government "must step in and take a public stake" in the company "to save thousands of jobs".

    British Steel has been placed in compulsory liquidation, putting 5,000 jobs at risk and endangering 20,000 in the supply chain.

    Theresa May says the "new Brexit deal" will mean there is no difference in environmental protection after Brexit.

    There will also be a legal obligation to seek to change the terms of the political declaration with the EU, she adds.

    On the offer hold a vote on holding a further referendum, she says she has "made my own view clear" that there should not be another vote.

    However, she says she recognises the "genuine and sincere strength of feeling" on this issue.

    She says those in favour of another referendum "need a deal" to make it happen.

    She asks them to vote in favour of her withdrawal bill at second reading stage in early June, and then "make your case to Parliament" afterwards.

    Continuing to explain her "new Brexit deal", Mrs May says it will legally oblige the government to seek alternative arrangements to avoid the need for the controversial border backstop by 2020.

    She says there is no majority for a no-deal exit, and no majority for voting to cancel Brexit by revoking Article 50.

    Changes proposed by the government represent 10 "binding" commitments to MPs in return for backing the Withdrawal Agreement Bill, she says.
