  2. Are the Tories making deliberately bad memes?published at 16:21 British Summer Time 22 October 2019

By BBC digital reporter Joey D'Urso

Conservative Party memeImage source, Conservative Party

The Conservative Party has got some new graphics and they’re pretty gaudy and childlike - one even uses the notorious "Comic Sans" font.

But what if the whole point of these memes is that they look awful so that people share them in a mocking way?

Let’s face it, an image of Boris Johnson saying "Get Brexit Done" or some other slogan he has said many times before it is hardly likely to go viral – unless you make it look weird.

In the Australian election earlier this year, Scott Morrison’s Liberals did surprisingly well and "boomer memes" - as this style of message is called - were partially credited with the campaign’s online success, according to Latika Bourke who is a London-based journalist for the Sydney Morning Herald.

The consultants who ran it – Topham Guerin – are now working for the Tories.

    So expect more dodgy memes.

If you are sharing them to make fun of them - or, indeed, to discuss the party's latest social media ruse - this may be exactly what the party wants...

  4. Lidington: Bill is a compromisepublished at 16:04 British Summer Time 22 October 2019

    House of Commons
    Parliament

Conservative MP David Lidington, who was Theresa May's de facto deputy when she was PM, says the Brexit bill "is a compromise" and MPs will find some elements of that compromise "difficult and uncomfortable".

However, he says, he will be supporting the bill.

He says MPs pledged to respect the referendum and should back the legislation to implement Brexit.

    House of Commons
    Parliament

SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford calls for "proper scrutiny" of the Withdrawal Agreement Bill.

He says more than 100 hours were spent on the committee stage for the Maastricht Treaty - officially known as the Treaty of the European Union.

"What on earth are we doing pushing this legislation through over a couple of days?" He asks.

"Let this House do its job and let’s have proper scrutiny over something which is absolutely so fundamental."

  11. Iain Duncan Smith criticises MPs who want more timepublished at 15:32 British Summer Time 22 October 2019

    House of Commons
    Parliament

Tory MP Iain Duncan Smith, a member of the Brexiteer ERG group, says he will vote for the bill and the programme motion later.

He says "those that say they don’t have enough time because there are so many things to debate" should remember that a white paper that "contains most elements" of the deal was published and debated last year.

"Most things have not changed," he says.

  12. Timetabling vote set to be very closepublished at 15:23 British Summer Time 22 October 2019

    Peter Barnes
    BBC political analyst

Voting on the programme motion - setting the Commons timetable for the Withdrawal Agreement Bill - looks very close.

If the DUP vote against and all 639 voting MPs turn up then Boris Johnson needs 33 backers from the opposition benches.

There are 23 former Conservatives who now sit as independents.

If all of them voted for the motion the PM would need 10 Labour or ex-Labour independent MPs.

But for each one of the ex-Tories who go against the motion – and there will be some – he needs to find another Labour rebel.

The vote is due to take place in the Commons around 7pm.

  14. Corbyn: Deal is 'deeply damaging'published at 15:16 British Summer Time 22 October 2019

    House of Commons
    Parliament

Mr Corbyn says the prime minister's Brexit deal is "deeply damaging" and one that the Labour Party "cannot sign up to".

He sets out that Labour wants:

    • More time to scrutinise to the bill
    • A "very clear commitment" on a customs union
    • A "strong single market relationship"
    • Guarantees on workers' rights
    • Non-regression on environmental standards
    • And "loopholes closed" to avoid threat of no-deal Brexit

Mr Corbyn confirms that the party will vote against the bill and the programme motion.

  17. Corbyn in 'crash out' warning over transition periodpublished at 15:13 British Summer Time 22 October 2019

    House of Commons
    Parliament

Continuing, Jeremy Corbyn says environmental groups and manufacturers have both expressed concern about the PM's "deeply damaging" deal.

He says if a free trade agreement cannot be agreed before the transition period finishes at the end of 2020, there is a danger ministers can "crash out" of the arrangement at that point.

He says this means the dangers of a no-deal scenario have been postponed "to a later date".

  19. Corbyn: 'Bare bones' trade deal would hit economypublished at 15:06 British Summer Time 22 October 2019

    House of Commons
    Parliament

Jeremy Corbyn says for the UK's future economic relationship to be based on a "bare bones" free trade deal will "dramatically hit" the country's economy.

He says his party supports membership of a "comprehensive customs union" with the EU being "hardwired" into the UK's future relationship.

  20. Corbyn aims to persuade Labour rebel to oppose billpublished at 15:02 British Summer Time 22 October 2019

    House of Commons
    Parliament

Labour MP Jim Fitzpatrick - who has indicated he will vote in favour of the government's bill - asks Jeremy Corbyn whether MPs who "follow their conscience" later will have the whip removed - that is when an MP is effectively expelled from the parliamentary party.

Mr Corbyn replies: "I believe in the powers of persuasion and this evening I would like to persuade my honourable friend - come with us and vote against the bill and the programme motion."

The Labour leader says this would be in the "interests of his constituents".
