  4. Analysis: Preparing for a second referendum on Scottish independence and actually holding one are not the same thingpublished at 17:23 British Summer Time 13 October 2016

    Glenn Campbell
    BBC Scotland Political Correspondent

To be clear, Nicola Sturgeon is in preparation mode. Keeping an option open, rather than committing to indyref2 anytime soon.

Her promise to publish a draft referendum bill next week energises the SNP membership.

Ms Sturgeon hopes it will also concentrate minds in the UK government - to head off a possible referendum with further devolution and a Brexit deal that preserves Scottish links with the EU.

    Nicola SturgeonImage source, PA

The SNP wants Holyrood to have new powers over agriculture and fishing, a say on immigration and the ability to make some international agreements.

It also wants Scotland, if not the whole of the UK, to remain inside the European single market.

The more of that that's delivered, the less likely indyref2 during Brexit negotiations becomes.

However, even if none of the SNP's demands are met, another referendum is still not inevitable.

That's because having lost once, Nicola Sturgeon and co. do not want to lose again.

They don't want to call a vote unless they are confident of winning and it would take a further shift in public opinion to convince them of that - a shift they think may come if Brexit looks like a bad deal for Scotland.

    Sarah Smith

It is certainly true that every day since the EU referendum the question is asked when, or if, the SNP's call for Indyref2 - as it's known - might happen.

For some, the campaign for a second independence referendum was started the day after the first in September 2014

Today Ms Sturgeon made very clear that she is prepared to trigger a second referendum if she feels that is the only way to protect Scotland from what she calls a "hard Brexit imposed by the hard right of the Tory party".

She was asked whether she thought the first minister's language this morning at the SNP party conference seemed threatening, she said:

    Quote Message

That's not the way the PM is approaching these matters. Not the kind of language I would use. The PM is approaching both the relationship between the four constituent parts of the UK and our relationship with the EU as we leave in a constructive and engaged spirit that's focused on getting the best interests for the UK whether that is the people of Scotland, England, Wales, Northern Ireland. She will be approaching these negotiations as she is the PM of the UK.

  10. Your views: 'Calling for another independence vote, on the back of the brexit vote is totally undemocratic'published at 16:09 British Summer Time 13 October 2016

A selection of your views on the news that a consultation will begin next week for a second referendum on Scottish independence.

Even if this is successful (and Scots vote for independence) it still requires a vote of the London parliament to repeal the 1707 Act of Union. As long as Scotland is part of the UK it cannot be admitted back into the EU - the Brexit process could take years - and it can't be assumed that the EU would necessarily allow Scotland back in immediately.

    Luke Bull

This is a decision for the people of Scotland. It makes absolutely no difference to the rUK if Scotland decides to leave or remain in the UK. However, as we are hearing from the EU, out means out. No fiscal union, no free access to rUK markets, no right to live and work in the UK.

    Cupcake

Calling for another independence vote, on the back of the brexit vote is totally undemocratic, The Scottish nationalist should be reminded that the EU vote was a British vote and should be seen in that context

    jaygee1010

In 2014, 71% of the 16 and 17 years old voted for independence, whilst 73% of those over 65 voted to remain in the UK. This is a considerable advantage for the SNP if the next vote happens in 2018 or 2019.

    Eastern European

Scotland needs to get on with it and become a normal country with its own place in the world. You have to admit, the current set-up is pretty demeaning for Scots.

    The World at One
    BBC Radio 4

As Scotland's first minister, Nicola Sturgeon announces a new independence referendum bill, her deputy calls for the UK government to work on a "bespoke plan" to keep Scotland in Europe.

Angus Robertson, the newly appointed deputy leader of the Scottish National Party told BBC Radio 4's The World at One programme that because 62% of the voters in Scotland voted to remain in the EU, his party will be looking for ways to work with the UK Government to make that happen.

He also said if the only solution was to have a second referendum, then the Scottish government would be willing to do that.

  17. Your views: 'IndyRef2.. ya dancer.. canny wait to tick that YES box again'published at 14:37 British Summer Time 13 October 2016

A selection of your views on the news that a consultation will begin next week for a second referendum on Scottish independence.

So, if there is another referendum and Scotland does vote for independence that will be 1 - 1, will there then be a 3rd referendum so there is a clear winner? Away goals will count double, failing that it will go to penalties.

    Claude Balls

The EU vote was in or out. No option on soft or hard exit. Out was voted for so out it should be. Scotland are not independent so are legally obliged to follow the UK vote.

    nomnom

Scotland if you truly want independence you will not join the EU after leaving UK. I'd rather not see you split from us, but i sure as hell don't want you getting stuck in the undemocratic EU empire. Stay out, like we are. Hopefully the rest of Europe will wake up.

    jhkg

To everyone (ruth as well) how can you say no appetite for a 2nd   referendum? You are only taking into account half the population. You are only speaking for roughly 50% of people. Not just the unionists. remember there was 45% at the last count. that has risen! So yes there is clearly people wanting this. But the unionists cant see past the tory rhetoric!

    weasel

IndyRef2.. ya dancer.. canny wait to tick that YES box again. Can't wait either to see the Unionist Parties and the BBC tie themselves in knots and contradict themselves at every turn trying to explain how every 'Scare Story' re economy, trade, higher shopping bills, plunging pound is good for Brexit but BAD for Independence.
