The most serious - red - warning may be long past, but driving conditions are generally difficult.

The current amber warning for snow, which covers much of Scotland, is valid until 10:00 on Friday.

This is traffic near Dornoch.

Glasgow Airport said it hoped to reopen on Friday morning, but warned that this would depend on the weather.

"Further snow is forecast and our teams will be continuing with snow clearing operations throughout the night," said a spokesman.

He said the disruption already experienced would have a knock-on effect which would lead to further delays and cancellations on Friday.

"Our advice to passengers is to only travel to the airport once they have checked the status of their flight with their airline.

"We would also remind people that a severe amber warning remains in place, so please only travel if it is safe to do so."

SP Energy Networks say the power network is doing well in challenging circumstances.

Guy Jefferson, SP Energy Networks director, said: “Our network in Central Scotland is holding up well despite the heavy snowfall we’ve seen over past 24 hours.

“Currently we’re operating at ‘business as usual’ levels, but with more poor weather expected we will continue to monitor any change in conditions."

The company said non-essential maintenance has been cancelled to free up engineers and teams are on stand-by to respond quickly to any fault locations.

Passenger Gary McDonald told BBC Scotland how he boarded a British Airways flight in London bound for Aberdeen - but ended up back in London nine hours later.

He said: “It was bizarre to say the least.

“I was surprised firstly that we took off.

“Everything seemed to be going fine.

“We circled Aberdeen for nearly 45 minutes.

“We were then going to try and land or get diverted to Edinburgh or Glasgow, but both of those were shut.

“We were going to go to Manchester and we were on approach, and then it closed.

“And then we ended up in Liverpool, who had never seen a British Airways flight, I think, ever.”

The plane refuelled and returned to London.

Mr McDonald said passengers had been told they would get a flight home on Saturday, but that the biggest frustration has been the “radio silence” from the airline.

Brian Kenny of the Road Haulage Association said First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was right to say people should not be on the roads unless it was absolutely necessary.

But he told BBC Radio Scotland’s Newsdrive: “With the greatest respect she has missed the point here.

“Most of these HGVs were trying to get back to a safe haven."

He said the first incident involving a HGV on the M80 happened about 11:30 on Wednesday and left other trucks stranded for nearly five hours.

Their attempts to reach safe places were then hampered, according to Mr Kenny, when it was announced a red warning would take effect from 15:00.

He added: “That put far more vehicles on the network than it could handle.

“I think the best intentions there were pretty much a victim of their own success.”

Asked if the HGVs should be better at getting to a safe place, Mr Kenny replied: “That’s a fantastic question.

“I would ask you where would you like them to go?

“There is no truck parking in Scotland. Most of the services that we have in Scotland couldn’t take that amount of trucks."

High winds have dislodged some roof panels on the Princess Royal Maternity Hospital in Glasgow, with insulation material being blown off the top of the building.

The city's health board says it has cordoned off the area around the building.

A spokeswoman said no-one has been hurt, and it has not affected patient care.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Lewis Ramsay said the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service sent its fleet of 4x4s to help stranded motorists on the M80.

But he warned that weather-related problems are not restricted to the transport network.

Mr Ramsay said: "Think about your safety in the home if you have got other heaters on or if you are using more electricity than you would normally do.

"If you have got any concerns about home safety give your local station a call and we will give you some advice.

"If needed, we will get out and help you whatever way we can."

Four hundred post offices were shut, or had reduced hours because of severe weather.

A spokeswoman apologised to customers saying it wasn't safe for some branches to open but most of their 11,500 branches were operating today, providing vital services to communities.

She thanked customers for their patience until normal business resumes.

Hamilton Gymnastics Club has had to cancel classes for the past two days, but the coaches have been making the most of the snow.

They have been trying to outdo each other with their snow gymnastics skills.

A full gritting night shift covered the Edinburgh’s priority one routes, with 22 lorries and 11 mini-tractors treating more than 600km of roads, pavements and cycle paths.

Adam McVey, City of Edinburgh Council's leader, said: “We are making every effort to keep the city moving in spite of severe weather, though we have had to make some decisions to cease services for the safety of the public and our staff."

Supt Phil Davidson of Police Scotland said the M80 clear-up was made more challenging due to the number of drivers who abandoned their cars.

Asked what happens to them, he told BBC Radio Scotland’s Newsdrive programme: "We have had to tow those vehicles away to get the road clear again.

"The message to any drivers is that if they own one of those vehicles to please call us on 101 with the details of the vehicle and we will be able to make the arrangements to unite them with their car."
