The impact of the coronavirus is being felt across Scotland but in communities like Muirhouse in Edinburgh, one of the most deprived in the country, it’s having a deep impact.

Local group LIFT (Low Income Families Together) is normally a support and advocacy service but it is now distributing food to hundreds of vulnerable families, using donations and funds raised for trips that are now cancelled.

LIFT’s founder Pauline Bowie said: “It’s really busy. It’s doubled since we started. I don’t have a clue what I’m doing. We just thought, let’s get some shopping and everything will be fine. I don’t what we’ll do when we run out of food.”

A single mother, who’s self-isolating with her toddler son, told me: “We don’t have the Internet, so I can’t shop online. I don’t have the funds to get people to go shopping for me. If it wasn’t for them, I’d be absolutely stuffed.”

Chief executive Norma Austin Hart said: “The amazing offers of help demonstrate the community spirit across our fantastic region."
