Intensive care units are on the frontline of the coronavirus pandemic, working to keep the most seriously ill patients alive.

Access into these units is extremely restricted, but BBC Scotland was allowed to spend a 12-hour shift with the overnight intensive care unit team at Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride.

Here are some of the images that we were able to take of the night shift at work.

Both the UK and Scottish governments have stressed the importance of mass testing in the battle against coronavirus, with the two governments responsible for different parts of the testing system in Scotland.

But there are some key differences in the approach being taken on either side of the border.

In both Scotland and England, any hospital patients who are suspected of having Covid-19 have been getting tested for the virus since the outbreak began.

The Scottish government recently announced that this would be extended to all patients over the age of 70.

But while all frontline NHS workers, social care staff and care home residents are eligible to be tested in England, regardless of whether they have symptoms, it is only those who are suspected of having the virus in Scotland who are being tested.

And in England, anyone over the age of 65 who is displaying symptoms of the virus is eligible to be tested, regardless of their circumstances.

This is not yet the case in Scotland, where over-65s with symptoms are only tested if they fall under one of the other categories - for example if they are a hospital patient or care home resident.

A public health expert says an army of detectives should be recruited to track the spread of Covid-19.

Prof Devi Sridhar told the BBC the UK was still lagging behind other nations in its response to the pandemic.

She said ministers should emulate Germany which has enlisted medical students and furloughed workers to help "test, trace and isolate".

The strategy involves tracking down and quarantining the contacts of everyone who tests positive for the virus.

The aim is to arrest the growth of Covid-19 so that lockdown restrictions can be eased.

Nicola Sturgeon is set to outline plans to ramp up testing for coronavirus.

The first minister will insist that Scotland has already successfully increased testing capacity.

But she will say a new effort is required to get ready for the next phase in tackling the virus.

UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock is also due to announce whether his pledge of 100,000 tests a day has been met - although it is "probable" it has not.
