Scotland's new "Test and Support" system of contact tracing should have the capacity to deal with the expected level of coronavirus cases once lockdown starts to be eased on Thursday, Prof Linda Bauld of Edinburgh University suggests.

First Minister Nicola Strurgeon has claimed Scotland is "very close" to reaching its capacity for 15,500 tests per day, while 660 of the targeted 2,000 contact tracers are in place, with "around 750" at various stages of the appointment and training process.

"In Vietnam, for example, they were contact tracing about on average 20 people for every positive for the virus," suggests Prof Bauld. "The Scottish government says it will need to have the capacity to test 2% of the Scottish population at any given time - that's a large number.

"But there were 113 new cases yesterday, which is fairly low, so as long as we release the lockdown gradually, we should be fine."

  3. What will the rules be on visiting parents?published at 10:13 British Summer Time 23 May 2020

Yesterday, the first minister was setting out how people will be able to meet up when lockdown starts easing.

Nicola Sturgeon said that travelling further afield to visit relatives outdoors would be allowed as restrictions are lifted - with phase one set to start from the end of May.

But Ms Sturgeon urged people to use their judgement and stressed that people should not go inside other people's houses, because of the high risk of spreading the infection.
