Professor Jason Leitch explains that if you have symptoms, you and your household should isolate and you should book a test as should happen at the moment.

The national clinical director says: "If that test is positive, the National Health Service will then be in touch with you to ask you your whereabouts for the couple of days before symptoms and from the symptomatic moment."

He suggests it would is "not a terrible idea" to keep a diary of who you come into contact with.

The people you have been in contact with - that is within two meters for for than 15 minutes - will then be told to self-isolate at home for 14 days. This may mean two weeks of not leaving your house even though you may not go on to develop symptoms.

Prof Leitch adds: "The sure way of not being asked to isolate is don't be within two metres of anybody. If you are not within two metres of anybody, you're not going to have an contacts."

  15. Analysis: Test and protect will need public supportpublished at 15:44 British Summer Time 26 May 2020

There is no doubt that “test and protect” is asking a lot of people.

It needs speed. Can the testers turn around results quickly and accurately – perhaps in under 24 hours - so that people know if they are positive?

The role of contact tracers will be crucial. Will they be able to reassure people and ask the right questions, so they can make the right decision about who will be defined as a contact?

While shoppers passing in a supermarket aisle might not count, this could affect large numbers of staff who work together. Could a whole fire crew be taken off the front line because a colleague tests positive and they can’t socially distance at work?

“Contacts” would be asked to self-isolate even if they have no positive symptoms or a positive test result. It is asking a lot of employers and their staff and could directly affect people’s livelihoods.

Test and protect will need public support - and the public to take action.

Police officers were given the power to fine people who refused to comply to lockdown restrictions in March

During the Scottish government media briefing at lunchtime, Christine Lavelle from the Sun asked the first minister about sanctions or fines for people that fail to give proper information to contact tracers or who break their 14 days of isolation.

The first minister said this would be kept under review, but highlighted a “tiny minority” of people had been subject to actions like fines for breaking lockdown in recent weeks.

She said people have shown a “collective care and solidarity” and that she wanted to persuade the public to do what iwasrequired of them under Test and Protect for the same reasons.
