  1. Date soon for public inquiry into hospitalpublished at 14:30 British Summer Time 16 June 2020

    Jeane Freeman

Health Secretary Jeane Freeman says a date will be set soon into a public inquiry looking at problems associated with the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

Labour's Anas Sarwar said it was vital that the inquiry provided answers to the families whose loved ones died at the hospital.

A report published on Monday said there were a "series of problems" with the design and build of the huge campus - but there was no clear evidence to link those failures to any "avoidable deaths".

The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital opened in 2015, but fears were raised after deaths were linked to infections.

Ms Freeman said a family liaison officer would be appointed as part of the inquiry.

There are fears that a new outbreak of Coronavirus in Beijing, could have an impact on exports of Scottish salmon to China.

There are reports of a number of supermarkets and restaurants cancelling orders of imported salmon, after the virus was identified at a wholesale food market in the city.

State-run media say the virus was found on a chopping board used for portioning imported salmon - but is not clear how that became infected.

The Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation say that there is no credible evidence linking the outbreak to imported food products

Edinburgh-based philanthropist James Anderson has donated £250,000 to boost women's football in Scotland.

Awarded through the Scottish Football Partnership Trust, the money is described as the single biggest investment in the women's game.

It is hoped that, following the processing of Gift Aid, the donation will increase to £312,500.

Anderson has previously donated more than £3m to help the men's game through the coronavirus pandemic.

Funds to the women's game will initially help Scottish Women's Premier League clubs, who are waiting to restart after the outbreak, as they look to retain non-playing staff and infrastructure.

  6. Steroid dexamethasone considered for Scotland after English trialpublished at 13:51 British Summer Time 16 June 2020

Chris Musson, from The Sun, points to a trial in England where patients with Covid-19 were given dexamethasone, a cheap steroid, and it was shown to reduce the death risk and he wonders if it is something that is being considered in Scotland.

Scotland's interim chief medical officer, Dr Gregor Smith, replies: "It certainly has a role in some patients, perhaps not all, in terms of how we mediate and reduce some of the extreme elements of the inflammatory response and we await further confirmation of the outcome of that trial, we will consider that and are currently working with the DHSC about how we will use the dexamethasone when it is available in the UK for that purpose."

Calum Ross from the Press & Journal asks about concerns within NHS Orkney.

A senior medic at the health board has resigned claiming failings make him "fear for the safety of patients", while the chief executive Iain Stewart has been criticised for travelling to his home on the mainland at weekends.

Nicola Sturgeon says the health board is conducting an investigation into travel allegations so she declines to comment further on this.

“NHS Orkney has coped well during the crisis,” she says, adding the government will continue to work with all health boards to ensure the right support is in place.

Simon Johnson of The Telegraph highlights calls for the two-metre rule to be relaxed to prevent the “wholesale collapse” of many sectors of the economy, including hospitality and retail.

Ms Sturgeon says the two-metre rule is being kept under review.

She insists the virus running out of control again would be more disastrous for businesses, though she accepts the practical difficulties social distancing measures pose.

If we fail in keeping the virus under control our lives and society will be much more adversely affected, she adds.

  9. Is the first minister closer to implementing regional lockdown changes?published at 13:33 British Summer Time 16 June 2020

Peter MacMahon, from ITV Border, points out that the R number, the infection rate, for Dumfries & Galloway is 0.56, with the confidence limit 0.43-0.75.

He says there are reports that Prof Chris Isles, at the area's Royal Infirmary, has suggested that with those figures the region could restart the tourist industry and even get schools back to some extent.

He wonders whether the first minister could accept the possibility of regional lockdowns where some guidelines could be eased.

Nicola Sturgeon says the Scottish government does not publish regional R rates because it is more risky to base judgements when numbers are so low, and hopes to start taking steps towards getting the whole of Scotland back to work from Thursday.

Dr Gregor Smith, the interim chief medical officer, explains: "One of the problems we have when breaking down data to smaller population levels is that it is much more subject to fluctuations."

The move comes after Marcus Rashford spoke to BBC Breakfast about relying on free school meals while growing up

It has just been announced that a "Covid summer school fund" is being set up by the UK government to help feed children in England during the holidays, after a campaign by footballer Marcus Rashford.

Children eligible for free school meals in term time in England will get a six-week voucher, Downing Street said.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson welcomed Mr Rashford's "contribution to the debate around poverty".

The Manchester United forward, 22, had called for a U-turn on plans not to offer meals during the holidays.

Nicola Sturgeon says Mr Rashford has been a very good example, using his own life experience to make the case for this.

  13. Furlough 'will be disguising true unemployment rate'published at 13:21 British Summer Time 16 June 2020

In response to the same question, Economy Secretary Fiona Hyslop says the job retention scheme is obviously keeping people in employment and recognises that not all workers will be in companies that can recover and will be disguising the true unemployment rate.

She says the UK government previously responded positively to requests for flexibility in the furlough scheme and for it to be extended from August.

Ewan Petrie, from STV, points out that the first minister has said an extension of the furlough scheme beyond October is essential and wonders if she has had any indication from the UK government that it will be willing to do so, even on a sector-by-sector basis.

Nicola Sturgeon says she has had no indication from the UK government that it will, but remains hopeful that discussions will have a positive outcome.

She points out that other countries, such as France, have already announced that their schemes would continue for a period of up to two years.

Tourism is particularly important to Scotland and is likely to be harder hit than other sectors, Ms Sturgeon suggests, saying she hopes that this will be taken into account by the UK government.

  15. School meals will continue to be delivered through council systempublished at 13:15 British Summer Time 16 June 2020

BBC Scotland's Suzanne Allan asks about today's announcement on school meals.

She queries whether it will be through the national scheme as it is now, where every child entitled to a school meal will get one, or will it be like the holiday hunger programmes where it is at the discretion of the council.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon says the plan is to carry on with the system councils have had throughout the crisis period, whether that be food directly through hubs or cash/voucher equivalents.

"It is important to make sure we mitigate some of the impact of the unusual circumstances we live in and the economic impact," she says.

  17. Global economic impact will last for some time, says ministerpublished at 13:10 British Summer Time 16 June 2020

    Fiona Hyslop

Economy Secretary Fiona Hyslop says the Scottish government is conscious of the “deep sense of anxiety” many will be feeling about their livelihoods.

She insists keeping people in work will be at the heart of recovery plans and the £230m stimulus package to be detailed by the finance secretary this afternoon.

Ms Hyslop confirms guidance on safe working in the tourism, hospitality, creative and house-moving sectors will be published this week, while advice for manufacturing and retail will be updated to reflect the likely move to phase two of exiting lockdown.

A labour market summit will be convened tomorrow, the economy secretary says, which will coordinate efforts to tackle unemployment and ensure people have the skills they need.

Ms Hyslop warns the global impact of this crisis on the economy will last for some time, so ongoing support is warranted. She pledges to ensure the focus on fair work is not lost and those who often face the biggest barriers are not left behind.

  18. Individual training accounts will be made available from todaypublished at 13:07 British Summer Time 16 June 2020

Ms Sturgeon tells the briefing the government is also providing support for skills and training.

Individual training accounts will be made available from today for people who are out of work or on low incomes, she announces.

The first minister says this year they are being adapted to respond to the challenges, with online training being provided.

She says initially 14,000 accounts are expected to be released, with more available later in the year.

Further detail will be available at the My World of Work website.
