Summary

  • Education Secretary John Swinney has survived a no confidence motion which was brought following a row over the way grades were issued this year

  • First Minister Nicola Sturgeon says she has provisional figures indicating that the R number - the growth rate of the virus - has been above one

  • Although it is acknowledged that when virus prevalence is low the R rate is disproportionately affected by outbreaks

  • Ms Sturgeon's message comes as it is revealed that several different clusters have been identified - including in Orkney, Aberdeenshire and Glasgow

  • She said the clusters should not be alarming in themselves, but no one should be complacent at this time

  • There were 47 new positive cases in the last 24 hours with 26 found in Grampian and 10 in the greater Glasgow area. There were no new deaths from a positive test

Asked by BBC Scotland's Catriona Renton whether she is worried that the clusters emerging could present a wider problem, the first minister says it's important to investigate every cluster carefully, identify patterns and learn lessons.

The virus clusters that have been identified in Glasgow and Peterhead have links to schools and in schools, she says, there is guidance in place that will be kept under review. We will, unfortunately and in all likelihood, see outbreaks in schools, Ms Sturgeon warns.

Hospitality and house parties are particular risks if people are not strictly abiding by the rules, she says.

The third group, Ms Freeman added, is those who have multiple health conditions and need ongoing help and support.

  14. FM: Upper estimate of last week's R number could be 1.3published at 12:35 British Summer Time 13 August 2020

The first minister warns the R-number may become less reliable as an indicator as the number of cases across Scotland decreases.

The first minister says this week's range includes the possibility that the R number last week was above one.

That won't be confirmed until later this afternoon but the upper estimate could have been as high as 1.3, she adds.

Ms Sturgeon says this is in part due to the inclusion of the Aberdeen cases.

The estimate for the number of people who could have been infectious with Covid in Scotland on 7 August was around 250.

The first minister points out that will be an underestimate as it does not include Aberdeen cases.
