Prof Reicher tells BBC Scotland: "Boris Johnson continues to have that notion that the problem is the public. He blamed the public for things going wrong.

"He threatened people with the police, even with the army in the background."

"Whereas Nicola Sturgeon was talking much more in terms of not blaming, making it much more explicit that it was hard for people to adhere and talking about everybody taking responsibility."

During her daily coronavirus briefing, Nicola Sturgeon insisted some success had been achieved in tackling the spread of the virus in the Glasgow area, thanks to the local lockdown.

    Quote Message

What the data tells us is not that these restrictions have yet started to reduce cases in Glasgow but that they have slowed the rate of increase, particularly around household settings. Now what we are also seeing in Glasgow, which goes in the other direction, is the university outbreaks that we are talking about today and dealing with.

BBC Scotland's Lisa Summers asks the first minister for some clarity about the data being used to drive government policy, specifically the shift from "elimination" to "suppression" of the virus.

She also asks about the proportion of cases coming from households and hospitality.

Nicola Sturgeon says she is looking at what more data can be made available.

She adds: "When I talk about suppressing to the lowest possible level, that is elimination.

"We have used the term suppressing to the lowest level in the four-nations agreement because not all governments wanted to use the term elimination.

"But when I say 'supress to the lowest possible level' I mean eliminate."

Ms Sturgeon says eradication of the virus won't happen without a vaccine but elimination means "you try to keep it to the lowest level you can".
