    New restrictions aimed at slowing a surge in coronavirus cases are to be announced by Scotland's first minister.

    Nicola Sturgeon has already stressed the new rules will not signal a return to full lockdown, even for a short period of time.

    It is likely that pubs in areas with higher levels of the virus will have much tighter restrictions imposed.

    The industry has called on the Scottish government to provide financial support for any businesses that are affected.

    The Public Health Scotland daily figures show more than 1,000 cases of Covid-19 were registered in the last 24 hours.

    The weekly statistics from the National Records of Scotland showed that coronavirus deaths in Scotland doubled to 20 last week.

    The latest National Records of Scotland (NRS) data shows that between 28 September and 4 October, 20 deaths were registered that mentioned Covid-19 on the death certificate - an increase of 10 from the previous week.

    As of Sunday, 4,276 deaths have been registered in Scotland where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

    Of the deaths in the week to Sunday, six occurred in care homes, 13 in hospitals and one in another institution.

    A further 1,054 people have tested positive for Covid-19, 13% of those newly tested yesterday.

    The day before saw 800 new cases, so there were 254 more cases in the last 24 hours.

    319 people are in hospital with confirmed Covid-19, a rise of 54.

    28 people are in ICU, up three.

    A further one person who tested positive has died.

    Pubs, restaurants and cafes will be waiting anxiously for the first minister's announcement

    Some tourism and hospitality businesses may never recover from the effects of more coronavirus restrictions, industry leaders have warned.

    The first minister will announce any further Covid curbs in the Scottish Parliament on Wednesday.

    Some government advisers have backed the idea of a "circuit breaker" lockdown as a "short, sharp shock".

    At her daily briefing yesterday Nicola Sturgeon said no final decisions had been taken but there would no return to lockdown.

    But she did not rule out local travel limits or further controls on people meeting in bars or restaurants.

    The Scottish Sun says it has seen a leaked document, external which suggests that hospitality will be facing new curbs.

    It reports that;

    • All pubs and bars will be forced to close for 16 days from Saturday, October 10 to Sunday, October 25 under a "brake to the virus"
    • But cafes and holiday accommodation will remain open, and "financial compensation" is being prepared for the holiday sector

    A total of 4,276 Scots deaths have been linked to Covid-19, official figures show.

    The National Records of Scotland (NRS) figures indicate 20 people died in the week ending 4 October.

    The figures are higher than the daily figure announced by Nicola Sturgeon because they include all cases where Covid-19 is mentioned on a death certificate, even if the patient had not been tested.
