  12. ANALYSIS: Return of schools statement tomorrowpublished at 12:09 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2021

    School

We are expecting the first minister's update to parliament tomorrow to focus on the return of in-person schooling.

We already know that the plan is for the very youngest in early years settings and Primary 1-3 to return full time next Monday 22 February.

At the same time a very small number of senior pupils who need access to school to complete vital practical work will also be back in on a limited basis.

This move is expected to get the green light tomorrow, although there is understood to be some nervousness around the decision, with coronavirus case numbers not falling as drastically as some may have hoped.

The next phase of the return is expected to be all senior years, who are working towards national qualifications, being back in school on a part-time basis and with social distancing in place.

I expect this to be earmarked for some time around the middle of March.

If case numbers continue to fall, we could see the rest of primary school pupils back in class at this time also. First, second and third years are expected to be the last to attend classes in person.
