"Seriously, make your children aware and keep off the ice".false

It is just days since the tragedy in Solihull in which two young brothers, their cousin and a friend died when they plunged into an icy lake.

  3. This wintry weather is a walk in the park for some

It's been a tough day for drivers, but depending on where you are it's not all doom and gloom in the snow.

Just ask these people walking in Baxter Park in Dundee.

    engineers on shetland

The community spirit in Shetland is really shining through despite hundreds of homes still without power.

Since the arrival of engineers, there’s been a real push to get people reconnected.

A break in the bad weather has helped, but there’s still a long with to go, with folk living in the west side of Shetland having to wait until Monday to see their power back on again.

A network of community halls is providing warm spaces, hot meals and drinks as well as a place for people to charge their phones and even do their washing.

With the countdown to Christmas well and truly on, there’s still a festive spirit in the islands.

Last night the local drama group was able to stage the pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk once again after it had been postponed for three nights.

All Shetland wants for Christmas is the lights back on for everyone.

  7. Reassurances given over Strep A antibiotics supplies

    Antibiotics

Scotland's health secretary says the weather will present challenges when it comes to ensuring supplies of antibiotics to treat Group Strep A infections.

But Humza Yousaf reassured people that there are protocols in place to ensure medicines get to central Scotland as well as remote and island communities.

Mr Yousaf said there was plenty of stock available as the UK faces a growing number of Strep A infections.

  8. Celtic boss Postecoglou helps driver stuck in snow

    Postecglou helps driver

A driver stuck in the snow in Lennoxtown near Glasgow got a surprise helping hand - from Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou.

The Australian boss helped other motorists push the stranded car after it slid to a halt near Celtic's training complex.

Michael McDonnell, who also joined the rescue operation, tweeted: "Someone stuck in Lennoxtown I jump out to help and big ange came out as well before anyone man of the people.

"I turned round when I was pushing and he was, ‘you want a hand?’"

  9. About 1,600 Shetland properties still without power

    engineers in Shetland

About 1,600 properties in Shetland remain without power as engineers try to restore supplies.

Heavy snowstorms disrupted electricity supplies at the start of the week, leading to a major incident being declared.

Teams of engineers travelled by ferry to Shetland during the week to help. Energy firm Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) said the aim was to get the majority connected by the end of the weekend.

However, some "small clusters" on the west side of Shetland's mainland may not have power back until Monday.

  10. Queues clearing at Glasgow Airport

    Rajdeep Sandhu

BBC Scotland correspondent at Glasgow Airport

It seems the queue of passengers affected is being slowly but surely cleared as staff work to rearrange people's travel plans.

Roberta Shields from Renfrewshire is here too, and tells me she was meant to be travelling to New Delhi in India via London Heathrow.

She says she hadn’t flown in 17 years and so far it was “a disaster” as she had been given conflicting advice on what to do and what queues to be in.

I got talking to Rebecca Johnston from Glasgow who is travelling with her son to try and get to the World Cup final in Doha, Qatar.

She says the situation is “frustrating”. The weather not only disrupted their flight but they also had difficulty getting a taxi to the airport this morning.

  11. Slip sliding away

    James Cheyne

    Kids sledging

With lots of Schools closed, the big hill outside Dunblane Hydro seems to be the local spot for sledging.

There are probably about 20 parents and kids having a great time there, including Mason, 12, and Abigail, 3.

The latest Scottish Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) season has started.

Daily avalanche hazard forecasts are provided for six mountain areas - Lochaber, Glen Coe, Northern and Southern Cairngorms, Creag Meagaidh and Torridon - until about mid April.

The first forecasts have warned of a "considerable" risk in the Northern and Southern Cairngorms, and "moderate" hazard in the four other areas.

SAIS recorded a provisional figure of 162 avalanches for the 2021-22 winter season.

The highest number ever - 350 avalanches - was recorded in the 2014-15 season.

The forecasts are used, along with other information, by walkers, climbers and snowsports enthusiasts in planning trips into the hills.

  13. Do you want to build a snowman?

    Steven Godden

    BBC Scotland

    Snowman

Iva Georgieva, Juliette Haddock and Elisa Haddock outside the British Red Cross shop on Auchterarder High Street.

Elisa manages the shop and Iva is her assistant.

Iva says it took her an hour to walk to work this morning through the snow.

The wintry weather means it’s been quiet so they decided to build a snowman outside. Juliette was supposed to have a maths test so was delighted that her school was closed.

  14. People power clears pitch at Peterhead

More football news - this time supporters at Peterhead FC "pitched" in to clear the ground of snow.

    Stagecoach depot

Buses in Perth have been struggling this morning.

Stagecoach have shared images of the conditions its drivers faced on the road and in its depot.

The company says its services 5 & 6 are now operating again and teams are working hard behind the scenes to keep the city moving.

Some services are still affected, but updates are available on the bus company's app.

  16. Dundee FC not hopeful match will go ahead on Saturday

    Dens Park

Dundee have issued a heads-up to fans ahead of their scheduled home match with Cove Rangers on Saturday.

Despite undersoil heating being on since Monday, the freezing conditions and last night’s snowfall have meant the pitch is now in a state the club believes would put players’ safety at risk.

The club had already made the decision to close some stands due to frozen pipes.

There is also concern that surrounding areas inside and outside the stadium are also dangerous.

Quote Message: We requested an early pitch inspection to give supporters as much notice as possible as it’s our belief that this fixture will not go ahead. However, regrettably, the SPFL has decided to delay an inspection until tomorrow morning so we cannot give spectators as early a decision as we would have wished. We shall confirm the position with this fixture tomorrow morning. from Spokesman Dundee FC

  17. Southern Scotland escapes the worst snow impacts so far

    Giancarlo Rinaldi

South Scotland reporter, BBC news website

A yellow weather warning has not caused any major issues across Dumfries and Galloway and the Borders so far.

Heating failures have closed Langholm Academy and Primary and pupils at Lincluden Primary have been moved to The Bridge site in Dumfries.

An alert for snow and ice is in place until 21:00 while another has been issued for most of Sunday.

  18. Amber warning ends but new yellow warning issued

    Met Office warnings

The Amber warning for snow has now ended.

However, a yellow warning for snow and ice remains until 21:00.

And the Met Office has issued a new yellow warning for ice, covering the Dumfries, Galloway, Lothian and Borders and Strathclyde weather areas.

The alert begins at 21:00 and goes through the night to 10:30 on Saturday.

Forecasters say showery rain and sleet, with snow over some hills, will lead to an ice risk and possible travel disruption.
