  1. Flooding in Scotland - the main pointspublished at 18:48 British Summer Time 7 October 2023

That's it from our live coveage of the flooding in Scotland for the moment. But here is a reminder of today's main developments in what police have described as a "major incident":

    • The Met Office issued two amber severe weather warnings covering much of Scotland as a month's worth of rain fell in one day.
    • Ten people were airlifted to safety after a series of landslips on the A83 in Argyll and Bute.
    • There was widespread flooding across Scotland with places such as Greenock, Dumbarton, Aberfoyle and Grangemouth, all having roads, homes and businesses affected.
    • Trains were particularly disrupted with no cross-border services running into or from Scotland, and widespread closures on lines running to and from the central belt.
    • Roads across the country were blocked or impassable and police warned drivers in Argyll and Bute not to travel.
    • Many events were cancelled including football matches and protest marches.
    • The bad weather looks like it will extend into Sunday with an amber warning in place for parts of central and north east Scotland until 1400.

Dozens of trains were cancelled due to the bad weather on Saturday - and cancellations will continue into Sunday

David Simpson, ScotRail service delivery director, said: "We know the impact that disruption to train services following extreme weather can have, but our first priority is always to ensure the safety of our staff and customers.

"Disruption will continue into Sunday because of the level of extreme rainfall seen in many parts of our network.

"Everyone is working hard to get services back to normal as quickly and safely as possible.

"Customers are advised that they should check their journey before travelling, and keep an eye on our website, app, or social media feeds regularly for live updates."

One of the areas that Sepa - Scotland's environmental protection agency - was most worried about was Aberfoyle in the Stirling area.

Flood waters in its Main Street were knee deep. For some businesses, the cost may be considerable. I spoke to Phil Cawdor who runs the Forth Inn, a popular inn for dining and accommodation right in the middle of the town.

"This might close us permanently," he told me. "It's such a shame. We've got everything we can do done. We've got flood pumps working. We have physical barriers up. We've got smart air bricks. We have pumps under the floor and it's still rising."

  7. Amber rain warning extended for north Scotland into Sundaypublished at 17:34 British Summer Time 7 October 2023

The severe weather amber warning, external for heavy rain has been extended into Sunday afternoon for parts of the north and east of Scotland.

The Met Office said that the heavy rain would move north and east this evening and overnight, leading to flooding and disruption.

The new warning runs from 2100 on Saturday through to 1400 on Sunday and covers parts of Angus, Perth and Kinross, Aberdeenshire, Moray and Highland.

The previous warning which covers west and central Scotland is due to expire at 0600 on Sunday.

An amber warning means there is a potential risk to life and property, especially from fast flowing or deep floodwater. The Met Office says the heavy rain is expected to lead to widespread disruption with homes and businesses flooded; damage to buildings, and some communities cut off by flooded roads. There is also the chance of power cuts and loss of services to people's homes.

  8. 'It's been very challenging' - Transport Scotland bosspublished at 17:04 British Summer Time 7 October 2023

The agency charged with responding to incidents caused by the Amber weather alert says conditions are making it too unsafe to start a clear up.

Stein Connelly from Transport Scotland told BBC Scotland news that his staff had faced "very challenging conditions".

He said that it was particularly hard in the Argyll and Bute area, where the A815 and the A83 were currently closed.

Connelly said: “It’s unsafe for the operatives to go in and clear some landslips that we have had their and so this is going to last for quite some time.

"Reportedly we have had approximately one month of rain in 24 hours so it has been extremely challenging.”

He added: “The police message is avoid travel if you can, especially in Argyll and Bute. In the other areas we are saying it’s a high risk of disruption.”

    Quote Message

At the moment with the heavy rainfall it is unsafe to let the operatives go in and try to clear these landslides and that’s what gives us an issue."

As the flooding in Scotland continues to disrupt communities, here's a quick summary of the latest developments:

  12. Main Glasgow to Edinburgh train line reopenspublished at 15:39 British Summer Time 7 October 2023

The main Glasgow to Edinburgh train line - which had been closed because of flooding - has reopened.

Network Rail engineers had to inspect the line at the Winchburgh tunnel as torrential rain threatened to make it unsafe for trains. It reopened just after 3pm.

But many rail lines in Scotland remain closed. The Highland mainline was shut as water levels on the River Tay reached danger levels. Network Rail said they were particularly concerned about the Dalgusie Viaduct and had put someone in to watch the crossing.

Meanwhile at Dalmuir near Glasgow, the pumps used to clear the line at a section of tunnels were overwhelmed, with waters reaching around the window level of the trains.

    Cancellations at Glasgow's Central Station

At Glasgow's two main stations, passengers were left with few options as the vast majority of trains were delayed or cancelled.

At Central Station there were large queues as people looked to make alternative arrangements with the west coast mainline not taking any trains south to England.

It was similar picture at Queen Street, which runs trains to Edinburgh and the north of Scotland. It was quieter here, although there was still someone playing the piano to try to lift spirits.

One passenger I spoke to said he had been travelling around Europe for the past six weeks and hadn't seen a cloud in the sky.

He had now been forced to cancel his planned cycling trip to Thurso and would instead be heading to Ireland.
