    A scenic route in the Highlands may need a 10 year-long strategic plan to ensure the roads involved can cope with increased traffic, an MSP has said.

    Scottish Labour MSP David Stewart said the route was an important economic driver but added that there were road safety and maintenance issues to be considered.

    North Highland Initiative, which promotes the NC500, said it encourages responsible driving of the route.

    The NC500 features roads in the Black Isle, Caithness, Sutherland and Wester Ross.

    Brexit Negotiations Minister Mike Russell says the Standing Council has now met on two occasions.

    Mr Russell says it is looking at the options for Scotland's future relations with the EU and he is hoping to publish its findings as soon as possible.

    Mr Rumbles says the rural economy minister has no plan beyond 2020 for farm payments and asks if Mr Russell will urge his colleague to "get his thinking cap on".

    The minister replies saying perhaps the Lib Dems should get their thinking cap on and that Fergus Ewing is a very forward thinker.

    A group of experts set up to advise the Scottish government in the aftermath of the Brexit vote has met for the first time in Edinburgh in July.

    The Standing Council on Europe is made up of 18 legal, economic and diplomatic specialists.

    It was established by Nicola Sturgeon after the UK opted to leave the EU despite 62% of Scots voting to remain.

    Its chairman Professor Anton Muscatelli said it would look at how best to secure Scotland's place in the EU.

    The Scottish minister responsible for negotiating with the UK government ahead of Brexit has said he expects to announce a formal process for Scottish input soon.

    Michael Russell was speaking after meeting the UK government Brexit minister David Davis in Downing Street.

    Mr Russell told BBC Scotland the meeting - the first between the men in their new jobs - was a "good start".

    He said he hoped to win the argument on staying in the single market.

    But he warned it was "inconceivable" the UK government could negotiate on Scotland's behalf on devolved issues.

    In a joint statement, Mr Russell and Mr Davis said the talks had been positive, with an "open exchange of views".

    Brexit Negotiations Minister Mike Russell says he has met with the secretary of state for exiting the EU last week.

    Mr Russell says he will report regularly to parliament when questions begin and progress was slow.

    The minister says the people of Scotland are being put in a position where they may be taken out of the EU against their will.

    Mr Russell advises the Tories to get over the second independence referendum after an intervention from Conservative MSP Jackson Carlaw calls for plans for Indyref2 to be shelved.

    The Scottish Prison Service has suspended a consultation on the planned site for a new Inverness prison so it can assess an alternative location.

    SPS has faced opposition from local residents to its plans to build its HMP Highland on farmland at Milton of Leys.

    The service said it would make an assessment of the alternative option.

    But it added that if this site was deemed to be unsuitable, it had "a commitment to progress" the Milton of Leys project.

    SPS said the same landowner was involved in both sites.

    The minister agrees that Police Scotland are the only force  to pay VAT in the UK.

    Last month, Police Scotland said "there is no overtime ban", after claims officers were told to abandon drug investigations in case they had to work extra hours.

    The rank-and-file whistle-blower said he risked "career suicide" by revealing his concerns.

    The general secretary of the Scottish Police Federation (SPF), Calum Steele, published an email from him on twitter.

    Police Scotland said there was no specific cap on overtime spending.

    The force is facing a £21m shortfall in running costs this year, dwarfing the £18m overspend last year, despite an £18m budget boost from the Scottish government for 2016/17.
