    He says he wants the family to know that MSPs are thinking about them at this difficult time.

    Mr Ewing asks what will replace the EMFF.

    What has the UK government said about support for the fishing industry, he asks.

    Mr Ewing says the EU is the largest export market for Scottish fish.

    The fisheries minister says he is delighted the chamber will unite ahead of the Brussels negotiation.

    Fisheries Minister Fergus Ewing says during this debate he has learned of the very sad news that Alex Johnstone has passed away.

    The minister says had he been here for this debate he would have been a jovial and reasoned presence 

    Mr Ewing says he was a "doughty fighter for the North East".

    The minister says: "We will miss him."

    On Monday the Fisheries Minister Fergus Ewing  told fishermen he was determined to protect EU markets and funding.

    Mr Ewing, speaking as he toured Peterhead fish market, also confirmed a £5m investment to "modernise and enhance" Peterhead port - Europe's largest fishing port.

    The Scottish Fishermen's Federation has called for a withdrawal from EU common fishery deals after the Brexit vote.

    Mr Ewing said he was working for the best deal possible for fishermen.

    Scottish Conservative MSP Finlay Carson says he welcomes the announcement from the cabinet secretary about the £5m funding for Peterhead Port.

    Mr Carson says Scottish fishermen are disappointed in blue whiting arrangements because EU countries benefit over Scottish fisheries.

    The Tory MSP says it is another example of Scottish fisheries "being sold down the river." 

    He says the government need to ensure that Marine Scotland is "fit for purpose".

    Mr Carson says the interest of Scottish and UK fisherman should be at the forefront of negotiations from now on.

    Mr Stewart says there is a global food shortage and yet a huge amount of fish is discarded in the North sea.

    Scottish Lib Dem MSP Tavish Scott says many ports have benefited in the past from EU funding and he asks the minister what will happen between now and Brexit.

    Mr Scott underlines the importance of the scientific research, that takes place in Scotland, to the fishing industry. 

    The Lib Dem MSP says the fishing industry needs access to the single market and he calls on the Tories to recognise that. 

    He says transposing fishing legislation could take years with some commentators predicting it to take up to two decades.
