    BBC Scotland has learned almost a third of sports in Scotland could have active coaches working with children without the proper background checks. 

    Figures provided by Sportscotland, the government agency for sport, show major sports such as swimming and football are currently failing to guarantee those who should be checked, are checked.

    The Conservative spokesperson for young people, Liz Smith, described the figures as a major concern and says more should be done to provide consistency. 

    Sportscotland say gaps can sometimes be explained by new coaches coming into the system. 

    The figures obtained by the BBC show over 1800 coaches across Scotland could be active without the proper background scrutiny.

    The Health Committee will hold two evidence sessions on child protection in sports.

    First up the Health and Sport Committee will look at child protection in Sport, following the spate of footballers who have said they were abused at clubs as children. 

    Fraser Wishart from the PFA Scotland, Andrew McKinally and Donna Martin from the SFA and David Little from the SYFA will give evidence in the first session.

    The second session will hear from Children 1st, Cosla, the Young People’s Commissioner, the NSPCC and Police Scotland and Volunteer Scotland.
