Nicola Sturgeon has said a second referendum on Scottish independence will be called between autumn 2018 and the spring of 2019.

The first minister said the possible centralisation of power at Westminster, following Brexit, had implications for Scotland's economy, society and democracy.

Ms Sturgeon said she would ask the Scottish Parliament next week for permission to request a Section 30 order from Westminster.

The move would allow a fresh legally-binding referendum to be held, if consent is granted.

SNP MSP Bob Doris says there has been a material change in circumstances with Scotland being dragged out of the EU against its will.

Mr Doris says the opposition parties have "displayed an affront to democracy".

The SNP MSP says the most divisive thing politicians can do is to deny the people a vote on their own self determination.

That is precisely what the Tory government is planning to do to the people of Scotland, he says.

  12. 'The SNP will always look to separate this country'published at 15:10 Greenwich Mean Time 22 March 2017

Labour MSP Iain Gray says the fundamental difference between Scottish Labour benches and the government's is that his party will always seek to unite.

"The SNP will always look to separate this country," he says, adding that it is "divisive" to call another referendum.

    Labour MSP Iain Gray

Mr Gray says the Scottish government "cast iron promises" have been "as disposable as the Scottish Green manifesto promises".

The Labour MSP says the first minister announced that a second referendum would be called at her residence and in television studios before bringing it to parliament.

He says he accepts the prime minister has been inept in her response but it is the Scottish people that are caught between "two belligerent governments" who do not listen to one another.

Mr Gray says this is not a two day debate and that it has been going for 10 years, "the Scottish people gave their answer and it's no," he says.

SNP MSP Alex Neil thanks all those who wished him well during a recent illness.

Mr Neil says he has campaigned all his life for Scottish independence and he believes that "the referendum must only be held once we know the outcome of the Brexit deal."

The SNP MSP says the trading relationships might influence the eventual outcome of indyref2.

Greens MSP Patrick Harvie and SNP MSP Alex Neil

He says he supports the government's motion on the basis that "we need to know the outcome of deals" before an independence referendum.

Greens MSP Patrick Harvie intervenes to ask if he has confidence in the UK negotiating trading deals.

Mr Neil says we need to take cognisance of any trade deal "if we are living in the real world".
