Mr Leonard says he is glad the first minister raised Bield homes as people are about to be evicted from their specialist care homes.

He cites the case of Nancy Sutherland, who he says is 94 years old and has dementia and relives the trauma every day.

The first minister says this is an important issue, particularly for the residents of Bield Care Homes.

Ms Sturgeon says the government recognises how traumatic this is for residents.

She says the government have engaged with the company to ensure plans are in place for residents.

The Scottish government is being urged to step in over the future of up to 12 Bield care homes.

The firm has said financial constraints means it has to look differently at how the business operates.

Unison has warned that the closures would be a "disaster", with about 160 elderly people losing their homes.

Bield said it was in advanced talks to secure a new provider for four of the care homes in Edinburgh, Fife and Jedburgh.

Families and staff affected by the planned closure gathered in Glasgow on Saturday to urge Scottish ministers to intervene and protect the future of their loved ones.

    ruth davidsonImage source, bbc

Ms Sturgeon accuses the Tories of breathtaking hypocrisy, adding that the justice secretary did his job.

Ms Davidson say the public has the right to see the decisions the government takes, not have them taken behind closed doors in secret.

The first minister again says Michael Matheson came to the chamber last week to answer questions and says he did not interfere where he should not.

She says the justice secretary is accountable to the parliament and he acted appropriately.

Ms Sturgeon accuses Ms Davidson of a deflection, to take attention away from the EU Withdrawal Bill.

She says the Scottish Tories are nothing more than lobby fodder.

Last week, Scotland's justice secretary criticised the Scottish Police Authority over its attempt to bring the chief constable back to work.

Phil Gormley is currently on special leave while allegations of gross misconduct are investigated.

His lawyers accused Michael Matheson of making an "unlawful" intervention to stop him coming back to work.

But Mr Matheson told MSPs in a statement that he had simply questioned "clear deficiencies" in the decision-making process.

He revealed that he only discovered on 9 November that the SPA had decided at a "private meeting" two days earlier to allow Mr Gormley to return to duty.

  14. The first minister says Matheson raised legitimate questions of the SPApublished at 12:08 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2018

The Scottish Conservative leader again says there are no minutes of the meeting and says the chamber only heard of this six weeks after the event.

Ms Davidson claims the justice secretary secretly intervened in the case of the chief constable.

The first minister says Mr Matheson did not intervene in a disciplinary matter, rather he raised legitimate questions of the SPA.

She says: "I expect that of my justice secretary."

  15. 'The justice secretary has acted entirely appropriately' - Nicola Sturgeonpublished at 12:07 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2018

    nicola sturgeonImage source, bbc

Ms Sturgeon asks what Ms Davidson would have said if the justice secretary had not asked questions of the SPA over its decision to allow Mr Gormley to return to work.

"The justice secretary has acted entirely appropriately," she says.

Ms Davidson says this is about whether the justice secretary acted unlawfully and the truth is "we don't know".

She again says there were no minutes taken of the justice secretary's meeting with the then SPA chair Andrew Flanagan.

The first minister says opposition leaders are complaining about legitimate questions asked by Mr Matheson, and she says Mr Matheson did not instruct Mr Flanagan to prevent Mr Gormley returning.

She says the justice secretary answered questions last week on that matter.

Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson says the justice secretary last week tried to close down questions about his role in the future of the chief constable.

Ms Davidson says there are no minutes of the meeting between Michael Matheson and Andrew Flanagan, formerly of the Scottish Police Authority.

Ms Sturgeon says the justice secretary came to the chamber to be open and robust about the situation.

The first minister says there is a role for the justice secretary to make sure the SPA carries out its role responsibly.

She says Michael Matheson was right to ask questions about the SPA decision that Phil Gormley could return.

Ms Sturgeon says the SPA answers were not satisfactory.
