That is what was pathetic, he says, and asks: "Does she feel guilty for misleading the parent's of sick children?"

Ms Sturgeon says she said there was no proposal to close the ward in the TV debate because there was no proposal at that time.

The first minister says Mr Rennie is saying the health secretary should have stood against all of the clinical evidence of the nurses and pediatricians.

Scottish Lib Dems leader Willie Rennie says the first minister is hiding behind doctors who "did not force her to lie in that TV debate" over the Royal Alexandra children's ward.

Mr Rennie is warned by the presiding officer to watch his language, amidst uproar in the chamber.

"Is the first minister not ashamed for blaming the doctors for her broken promise?" Mr Rennie asks.

Ms Sturgeon retorts: "All we've learned from that question is Willie Rennie is a pathetic attention seeker."

She says the proposal for the closure of the children's ward came to the government a full year after the TV debate.

The first minister says she is hardly hiding as she is in plain sight in the chamber.

She again cites the clinical advice of the doctors.

Her reply is met with prolonged applause from the SNP benches, which does not impress anybody according to Mr Macintosh.

The presiding officer says to both Mr Rennie and Ms Sturgeon to watch their language.

This is not just about party politics, it is about the first minister's integrity, says Mr Leonard.

"This government tried to bury bad news in the middle of a snow storm," he says, referring to the timing of a press release from the government last Friday.

"Why should the people of Paisley ever trust you again?" he asks.

Ms Sturgeon again says clinical evidence underpinned the health secretary's decision.

    nicola sturgeonImage source, bbc

The first minister says every decision that effects the health of children should be a difficult one to make, referring to the health secretary's statement earlier this week.

The health secretary arrived at the decision based on the advice of clinicians, she states.

Clinicians believe the change will implement standards required for higher quality healthcare, Ms Sturgeon highlights.

The first minister points to the condition that individual care plans must be in place for patients before the change is made.

Shona Robison confirmed on Friday that child in-patient and day care services at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley would move to Glasgow.

She told the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday that there was "overwhelming clinical support" for the move.

Scottish Conservative health spokesman Miles Briggs said the first minister had told voters there were no plans to close the ward in May 2016, just before the Holyrood elections.

Ms Sturgeon say the health secretary spoke to one of the campaigners last night and will meet with them again on 6 February.

Mr Leonard says: "When a government makes a promise to the people it is important that promise is met, not least when it comes to the wellbeing of families".

He says in May 2016 the first minister gave a promise to Gordon Clark on national TV that there was no proposal to close the children's ward at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, but now the government is closing the ward down.

Mr Clark is in the gallery, says Mr Leonard, and he calls for the first minister to apologise to him.

Mr Gormley, who has been on leave since September, has denied any wrongdoing.

The SPA, which is expected to provide an update on Mr Gormley's special leave on Thursday, declined to comment on disciplinary matters.

  20. Davidson asks if transparency is still the watchword of the new police forcepublished at 12:11 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2018

    Ruth DavidsonImage source, bbc

Ms Davidson says we are still having to piece together the details of what happened in November about one of the most important decisions about the police since Mr Matheson became justice secretary.

She says we were told transparency would be the watchword of the new force, and asks if that can still be said to be true.

The first minister says there is nothing today different from what Ms Davidson said last week.

She says the justice secretary gave a full statement and answered questions in the chamber.

There was also a debate yesterday on this issue where the Tories lost the vote, she says.
