National Museums Scotland (NMS) raised nearly £2m to give the Galloway Viking hoard a permanent home in Edinburgh.

The money will be paid to metal detectorist Derek McLennan, who found the hoard in Galloway in 2014.

NMS was given six months to raise £1.98m or risk losing the artefacts to a private buyer.

Dumfries and Galloway Council had put in a bid to secure the hoard for a new art gallery being built in Kirkcudbright but it was ultimately unsuccessful, despite going to appeal.

Almost six million hours of unpaid work have been carried out by offenders in the past six years, government figures have revealed.

In 2016 - 2017, more than three quarters of community payback orders included a requirement for unpaid work.

Community Payback Orders include snow clearing, graffiti removal and redecoration of community facilities.

Justice Secretary Michael Matheson said the policy had helped bring Scotland's reconviction rate to an 18-year low.

The Criminal Justice Social Work Statistics in Scotland, external report shows that older people were more likely to successfully complete their orders, with completion rates of 77% for those aged over 40 and 60% for under 18s.

Those in employment (81%) were also substantially more likely to complete than those unemployed (62%).

    Accodring to the MVT:

"The Agent of Change Principle is not complicated or controversial, it’s simple common sense: Agent of Change says that the person or business responsible for the change is responsible for managing the impact of the change.

"This means that an apartment block to be built near an established live music venue would have to pay for soundproofing, while a live music venue opening in a residential area would be responsible for the costs.

"A resident who moves next door to a music venue would, in law, be assessed as having made that decision understanding that there’s going to be some music noise, and a music venue that buys a new PA would be expected to carry out tests to make sure its noise emissions don’t increase."
