    Environment Secretary Roseanna Cunningham makes assurances that the Scottish government takes the protection of marine environments very seriously.

    Mr Finnie says dredging will seriously damage eco-systems and urges the government put a stop to it.

    Ms Cunningham says she is well aware of the strong views on this, which will be taken into account by Marine Scotland.

    A company has proposed harvesting tonnes of wild kelp in commercial operations on Scotland's west coast.

    Ayr-based Marine Biopolymers Ltd would extract natural polymers from the seaweed for uses in foods and pharmaceuticals.

    It has published a scoping report, externalas part of its work towards applying for one or more five-year licences.

    Under the plan, the amount harvested would rise over the years from about 1,300 to 30,000 tonnes wet weight.

    Comedian Ricky Gervais, television presenter and naturalist Chris Packham, conservationist Bill Oddie and actor Peter Egan all want to see exemptions on the practice outlawed.

    People in Scotland are being encouraged by Zero Waste Scotland to have their say on plans for a deposit-return scheme for drinks containers.

    A series of events will be held this summer aimed at gathering public opinion on the proposals.

    A study into how such a scheme would work has been commissioned by the Scottish government.

    The initiative would see customers pay a small surcharge which is refunded when the bottle is returned to a shop.

    A map identifying litter hotspots along Scotland's coastline has been launched.

    Aerial photographs of plastics and rubbish washed up and blown up on to beaches has beenposted online, external.

    The aim is to help organisations and volunteers involved in clean-up work better target their efforts - particularly in remote areas where litter often remains "hidden".

    Those behind the project hope it will become an "invaluable tool" in the fight against marine litter.
