Parliamentary Business Minister Graeme Dey says our models of health and social care must change to meet the needs of an ageing population.

That is why this government has invested in the integration of health and social care, he adds.

South Lanarkshire is one of many areas looking to redesign facilities, he explains.

Provision must adapt to meet changing needs the minister adds, and he says there is evidence that this new model will benefit more people.

Tory MSP Graham Simpson says Ms Lennon and he were on the South Lanarkshire Council and Reshaping Care was a project to help people stay at home rather than be in a care home.

This started under the Labour council they both served under, he says, and it was undoubtedly a success.

Mr Simpson says: "The reduction in care homes may be happening under an SNP government that is proving very, very easy to criticise, on many things, but on this they are continuing a direction of travel that has been many years in the making."

Ms Lennon intervenes to say the only vote on the care homes being discussed today took place in June under the SNP-run council

Mr Simpson replies: "I don't dispute that, but I'm saying the direction of travel started some years ago under Labour."

  9. SNP MSP highlight shift towards care at homepublished at 14:53 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2018

    SNP MSP Fulton Macgregor

SNP MSP Fulton Macgregor suggests this motion and debate indicates a misunderstanding by Ms Lennon of health and social care.

He says there is a national shift in priority from residential care to care at home and the homes mentioned are not up to standard for this.

We want people to stay at home as long as possible so we must give them the support they require, he adds.

  10. 'South Lanarkshire Council is making a dreadful mistake'published at 14:49 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2018

    Monica lennonImage source, bbc

Ms Lennon says the facts support the retention of these care homes, as research indicates by 2025 demand for care homes will have risen by a third.

The Labour MSP says: "South Lanarkshire Council is making a dreadful mistake."

When we have an ageing population we should be doing all we can to ensure we have more council run, publicly accountable, care homes.

Ms Lennon says there is zero clarity about what will happen to residents and staff at the care homes.

She says there is no good reason for closing down quality care home beds at at time when demand is rising for them, she says.

Labour MSP Monica Lennon says the SNP administration in South Lanarkshire Council is looking to close down some care homes in the area.

The council is refusing to listen to the case to keep McWhirter and Kirkton House open, she says.

Ms Lennon says the planned replacement by a hub is "not a like-for-like replacement".

She criticises Older Persons Minister Christina McKelvie, who also happens to represent the area, for not condemning the plans.

"What good is a minister for older people is she can't even stand up for the older people in her own constituency," she asks.

Two South Lanarkshire care homes are to close in favour of a new community care hub, it was revealed in April.

The council said care hubs would be better suited to meet the needs of people living in the area.

The first hub is to be located in the Hamilton and Blantyre area, and include 20 en-suite rooms and on-site services such as physiotherapy.

McWhirter House in Larkhall and Kirkton House in Blantyre are set to be replaced by the new hub.

Scottish Lib Dem leader Willie Rennie says the point of remembrance is to hear, to listen and to learn from those who fought for our country.

He highlights a film commemorating those who died in the war, which he says brings homes that people then were just like us.

Mr Rennie says many young men were excited to go fight for their country at the time.

Scottish Green co-convener Patrick Harvie says this moment of remembrance is a moment of shared recognition of the horrors of a war that touched so many lives, across Scotland and beyond.

Mr Harvie says in WWI there were nearly 10m military dead, twice as many wounded and millions more civilians killed.

The Scottish Green Party the intention is "quite simply, never to forget".

Mr Harvie says WWI was "an atrocity committed by the powerful against the powerless".

The roles of those who sold arms and told lies must also be remembered, Mr Harvie adds.

He says: "Not only never forget, but also never again."

The Scottish Green Party co-convener points out there is no memorial for those who said no to engaging with the conflict.

Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard tells the chamber of his own grandfather, Richard Hopkinson, who never spoke about his war experience.

He witnessed the grimmest horror of trench warfare first hand as he took part in the Battle of the Somme, Mr Leonard says.

Wounds were not simply physical, he adds.

As we commemorate the fallen, we must also speak out and take action for the living, the Scottish Labour leader says, adding that "we can create a better future".
