Professor Tahseen Jafry from Centre for Climate Justice echoes what her colleagues have said adding that "every extra bit of warming matters".

She highlights the implications of going from 1.5C to 2C citing food shortages, foods and heat related deaths.

We must drill down to the impact on humans, as this is still a bit of an unknown, she concludes.

  2. 90% target ignores Scotland's potential in renewables says WWF Scotlandpublished at 09:50 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2018

Siri Pantzar of the 2050 Climate Group says beginning transition to low-carbon now allows for more flexibility, rather than delaying until 2030.

Gina Hanrahan from WWF Scotland says the bill must aim for the 1.5 degree target.

The 90% target will only put Scotland at the global average target for 2050 she says, which does not acknowledge the potential for renewables and carbon storage here.

There is a plethora of new research coming forward which tackles the feasibility question around net-zero, Ms Hanrahan insists.

Teresa Anderson of Action Aid International says the findings in the IPCC report must be taken to heart if we are serious about averting "run away climate change".

Ms Anderson calls for "radical transformation action right now".

She says: "The bill is not strong enough in a number of ways."

"We need a much steeper curve of reducing emissions in the short term."

It is better to set high targets which force us to achieve more than have something considered achievable which leads to planetary breakdown, Ms Anderson insists.

  6. Background: Final call to save the world from 'climate catastrophe'published at 09:40 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2018

It's the final call, say scientists, in the most extensive warning yet on the risks of rising global temperatures.

Their dramatic report on keeping that rise under 1.5 degrees C, external says the world is now completely off track, heading instead towards 3C.

Keeping to the preferred target of 1.5C above pre-industrial levels will mean "rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society".

It will be hugely expensive - but the window of opportunity remains open.

Committee convener Gillian Martin asks if the bill is adequate to comply with the Paris agreement and recent IPCC report.

Caroline Rance from Friends of the Earth Scotland points to particular concerns about the pathway to 2030, suggesting this has changed very little from the 2009 Act.

She says these targets were put in place nine years ago and much has changed since then.

"The bill doesn't deliver on the Paris agreement," she tells MSPs.

The Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform Committee will begin shortly.

It is continuing its stage one consideration of the Climate Change (Emissions Reduction Targets) (Scotland) Bill.

This will put in place a new legislative target to reduce emissions by 90% by 2050.

Some have called for that target to be increased to a 100% reduction - in other words, creating a net-carbon neutral society.
