    Nicola Sturgeon

Mr Rennie insists: "The justice secretary is out of touch."

The Scottish Lib Dem leader tells the chamber the research says:

    • one in 10 police officers turn to alcohol or drugs
    • almost half suffer from exhaustion
    • one third of officers are turning up to work mentally unwell

The first minister says nobody is satisfied that police officers are reporting this and the government has a duty to ensure it is doing everything it can to address this.

Ms Sturgeon say there are 1,000 more police officers at the same time Lib Dems have been supporting austerity

  4. Rennie asks if justice secretary knows about mental health of policepublished at 12:33 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2019

    Willie Rennie

Scottish Lib Dem leader Willie Rennie says new research shows just 3% of police officers believe Police Scotland really cares about their health and wellbeing.

Does Humza Yousaf know what's going on, he asks.

We all care about the health and wellbeing of police officers, Humza Yousaf does and I do, insists Ms Sturgeon.

The first minister agrees the mental health of officers is extremely important and details measures that address this.

I am not standing here at all saying there is not more to do, but we all care and that is reflected in our actions, she says.

The first minister pledges to do so and press for all all party parliamentary group recommendations to be implemented.

Lib Dem MSP Liam McArthur criticises a recent BBC programme highlighting environmental impacts of meat production in the US and South America.

Mr McArthur asks if the first minister shares Scottish farmers' concerns that the programme made no effort to distinguish between mass production in the US and what happens here in Scotland which are of a higher standard.

The first minister agrees very strongly and says she has heard concerns about the programme.

Ms Sturgeon says "lazy reporting" must not be allowed to impune the sector here.

  9. Labour MSP says QEUH warnings not dealt with properlypublished at 12:23 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2019

    Anas Sarwar

Labour MSP Anas Sarwar says evidence shows NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde knew the water at the new hospital was contaminated when it was transferred from the contractor.

He also points to various other warnings which he says were not dealt with properly, leading to the death of at least one child.

If this happened in the private sector, there would not be a public inquiry, there would be a criminal investigation, he insists.

Mr Sarwar asks what ministers knew and when, and who will be held accountable.

Ms Sturgeon says the Scottish government is determined to get the answers Milly Main’s parents want and deserve.

She says she is unaware of the details of the evidence Mr Sarwar is citing today, but she encourages the member to share it with her and the health secretary so she can consider it.

It is not my job to direct criminal investigations, she adds.

Mr Chapman says Mr Watson was diagnosed with a basal sarcoma near his eye, but nearly two years later nothing has been done.

He asks what will be done to address this "scandalous situation".

The first minister agrees this is unacceptable and asks that her best wishes are sent to Mr Watson.

Ms Sturgeon says the health secretary will look into this.

  11. Lord Advocate considering toxicology service future as prioritypublished at 12:19 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2019

    Nicola Sturgeon

Mr Leonard says the Glasgow University facility also handles 90% of suspected drug related deaths in Scotland.

Scotland is in the grips of a drug death emergency and this unit plays a key role in informing the allocation of resource to prevent future drug deaths, he argues.

He urges the first minister to step in and find a resolution to the contractual dispute.

The first minister agrees the services are vital, and the Crown Office and Glasgow University have been working together to manage to transition to a new provider for these services.

The Lord Advocate and Crown Office are looking at this as a priority, she says.

  12. Delays to toxicology in postmortem reports raised by Leonardpublished at 12:17 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2019

    Richard Leonard

Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard asks when the first minister last had discussions about toxicology in post-mortem reports with the Lord Advocate

Ms Sturgeon says she will check this and is happy to report back to Richard Leonard.

The Scottish Labour leader says there is a backlog of delays at Glasgow University which is in a contractual dispute with the Crown Office, which is a matter of public concern.

He says brother and sister Gary and Emma, whose mum Susan died suddenly, have been waiting 26 weeks for a final post-mortem report and they are still waiting.

Will the first minister apologise to Gary and Emma and all the families going through this, Mr Leonard asks.

Ms Sturgeon expresses her deepest condolences to the family going through this and says she will look into this case.

The first minister says there has been an issue with the Glasgow contract, which will be extended in the short term.

In the long term, if Glasgow University can't continue with it, other arrangements will be put in place, she adds.

He asks when will the first minister and the health secretary respond to this issue.

Ms Sturgeon says she understands the need for families to get answers, but the information provided must be robust information.

The first minister says the government is absolutely committed to ensuring there is absolute transparency around all of this.

  14. FM urges people to come forward with informationpublished at 12:10 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2019

    Nicola Sturgeon at Holyrood

Mr Carlaw welcomes the appointment of Lord Brodie, saying questions need to be answered.

He asks whether the first minister and health secretary have seen the full clinical report on the hospital infections.

Ms Sturgoen says the oversight board has full sight of the report.

The Scottish Tory interim leader asks about what the Scottish government has done following reports that there were a further 10 infections.

The Health Protection Scotland report points to periods where it has identified spikes in infections, replies the first minister.

The oversight board will be looking into figures to ensure there is no under-estimating or duplication she adds.

Ms Sturgeon insists anybody that feels they have information must come forward and bring it to the attention of the Scottish government or oversight board.

Higher than expected rates of some infections were found in cancer patients at Glasgow's children's hospital in 2017, a report has said.

Health Protection Scotland said there was an upturn in "gram-negative" bacteria over a 10-month period.

This came a year before cancer wards were closed because of a link to contaminated water.

The mother of Milly Main said she was "100%" certain contaminated water caused her daughter's fatal infection.
