    The Galashiels branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) has been fined £8,000 after a bar worker was seriously injured falling into a cellar.

    Ann Cameron, 52, was in hospital for several days after stepping backwards and plunging through the hatch left open by a fellow member of staff.

    The accident happened two years ago at the Park Street social club on the day of the town's Braw Lads celebrations.

    The RBL branch admitted failing to ensure the safety of an employee.

    The widow of the co-founder of the Wickerman Festival in Dumfries and Galloway Jamie Gilroy, has revealed that his transplanted organs have been used to save or enhance the lives of several other people, following his death from a gunshot wound, external.

    Patsy Gilroy, a former convenor of Dumfries and Galloway Council, was speaking after receiving the Order of St John award at a ceremony to honour the families of Scots whose loved ones gave permission for transplant surgery in the last year.

    More than 100 people have pledged to support Portpatrick Harbour since a share offer was launched on Saturday.

    The Portpatrick Harbour Community Benefit Society hopes to raise £100,000 to safeguard the future of the facility.

    Its chairman Calum Currie said: "We knew there was a good strong interest out there from local people, regular visitors, sailors, maritime communities and expats keen to invest in our community share offer, but this has been a sprint start with over 100 investors coming forward on day one.

    "We have already reached 37% of our target and are extremely heartened by this remarkable support."

    A plan to demolish the landmark Wilton Mill Clock Tower in Hawick's Commercial Road has been given the go-ahead.

    The owners claimed it would cost too much to restore. Objectors insisted demolition would be short-sighted and irrecoverable.

    But council officials ensured certain features should be retained for any future development, and the scheme was approved.

    Photographs taken by a tiny camera fitted to a white-tailed sea eagle have given a genuine "bird's eye view" of the Galloway Country Fair.

    Elite Falconry, which gave a display in the main arena during the event, arranged for the eagle to take flight from the roof of Drumlanrig Castle on the evening of Saturday 22 August.

    Organisers of the two-day event say it attracted 20,000 people - 11% more than the previous year.

    A fine evening to come in Dumfries and Galloway, with further spells of sunshine.

    The settled conditions remain overnight when it will be dry with long clear spells. A few mist patches will form for inland areas. Temperatures will fall quite low to around 3C or 4C in the countryside closer to 7C in the towns and coastal areas.

    It will also be a dry evening in the Borders, with spells of sunshine.

    Cloud will tend to increase along the Berwickshire coast. Clear spells inland with some mist and fog patches forming. Inland temperatures will fall to around 3C or 4C, closer to 10C along the east coast.

    Scottish Borders Council has pledged to provide homes to refugees fleeing Syria.

    Council convenor Graham Garvie said it will work with registered social landlords to help the UK and Scottish governments to resettle the refugees.

    "I am keen that the Scottish Borders plays its part in providing support to the national co-ordinated effort to welcome refugees from war-torn Syria," he said.

    The councillor added: "We will also work with communities who wish to provide help and I am already aware of several Borders households who are keen to be involved and help support these desperate people in such obvious urgent need."

    Dumfries-born Lynsey Sharp broke the Scottish women's 800m record when she beat world champion Marina Arzamasova in the IAAF World Challenge in Berlin on Sunday.

    Sharp clocked one minute 57.71 seconds, the third fastest by a Briton behind Kelly Holmes and Kirsty Wade.

    Darren Lavery scored his third goal in as many games as Berwick beat 10-man Queen's Park, 1-0.

    The home side were immediately on the front foot, and Ross Drummond's shot was well-saved by William Muir.

    It rebounded into the path of Blair Henderson who was poised to score before Scott Gibson handled the ball and sent off.

    Lavery made no mistake from the spot, sending Muir the wrong way to notch his fourth of the season.

    Annan Athletic boss Jim Chapman said his team had secured a "good victory" against East Fife.

    "Our chances came, I wish we had taken a bit more of the chances that we created because we certainly had a good few.

    A solo kayaker has completed his trip around all of Scotland's lifeboat stations to raise money for charity.

    Nick Ray set off on the 2,015-mile trip in May and took more than four months to finish the challenge.

    The 51-year-old started at Kippford on the Solway Firth and travelled clockwise before finishing in Eyemouth in the Borders.

    Plans to build 19 holiday lodges near Selkirk will be discussed by councillors today.

    Alan Williams want to develop a 4.4 hectare site at Whitmuir Hall with the lodges and a new access road.

    The application has attracted around 40 objections, with some concerned about the impact on the landscape and wildlife.

    Council planners recommend the application is approved in principle.

    An armed robber who threatened to shoot an 80-year-old woman in her Borders country cottage has lodged an appeal against the length of his sentence.

    Taylor Wright, 21, was jailed for five years and 10 months at the High Court in Edinburgh last month.

    Appeal details emerged at Jedburgh Sheriff Court when he appeared for sentence on other outstanding charges.

    One angler has been rescued but the search for a second has been suspended after they were knocked into the sea at Eyemouth by a large wave.

    Eyemouth and St Abbs lifeboats were called out to the incident at about 17:30 on Sunday.

    Josh Todd and Rabin Omar were both on target as table-topping Annan Athletic secured a 2-0 victory over League Two rivals East Fife.

    The hosts opened the scoring when Smart Osadolor launched a quick counter-attack following an East Fife corner, crossing for Todd to score.

    And it was Omar who made the points safe, breaking into the box before firing home a low left-foot strike.

    Moffat man Pete Bowsher has picked up a coveted prize at the Scottish Open Chainsaw Carving Championships.

    Carvers from around the world used chainsaws to carve logs into the shapes of animals and people at the contest in Carr-Bridge.

    Mr Bowsher took won Claymore Trophy with his piece "Fish Fight", depicting a struggle between an eagle and a fish.
