During a speech in the Scottish Parliament, he said it was important the UK took an appropriate number of refugees, as well as providing aid and support to people displaced in and around Syria.

Mr Lamont added: "But with more than 60 million people forcibly driven from their own homes, simply taking in a few extra thousand is not going to solve the problem in Syria and beyond.

"We must focus on finding a solution that helps stabilise the countries where refugees are coming from."

  3. 'Underestimating demand'published at 16:50 British Summer Time 15 September 2015

The Campaign for Borders Rail said they are "delighted" that there is high demand from passengers keen to use the Borders Railway.

In a statement, they said they warned the Scottish government and Transport Scotland against "underestimating demand" even before track-laying started.

They added: "The campaign was assured that all trains would be lengthened in the initial weeks at least, but with many services running in the very minimum formation of two carriages, that is clearly not the case.

"Were it not for the general shortage of trains, adding more rolling stock would be relatively easy - although we would not countenance the inconveniencing of passengers elsewhere."

  13. Your views: Borders Railwaypublished at 15:05 British Summer Time 15 September 2015

Bob Fleet emails: Not so concerned that some of the trains are full but more so that half of them don't stop at Stow during the day. As it is double track it hardly changes the timetable if they stop rather than just pass each other at the same station.

I really can't see that they increase the railway's efficiency by not stopping. They seem to have time to stop at half a dozen tiny stations on the way into Edinburgh.

AD Rae emails: Travelled to Edinburgh from Stow on Monday 7th Sept. Train was late - so what else is new? I can accept that but the level of cleanliness on the carriages that day did not match the new station's high specifications. Nevertheless, wonderful to see the line re-opened.

Marilyn Cousin emails: I arrived at the Park and Ride at Tweedbank to catch the 11.01 train on Saturday 12th September to find the car park full with no available spaces. When I returned at 15.00 the same day, the Park and Ride was littered with vehicles inappropriately parked.

The Malayan Emergency, as it became known, was a bitter conflict against hardened ethnic Chinese communists.

Sometimes called the "forgotten war", its memories remain strong among the young national servicemen of the day.
