Adam Jones, a former team-mate of Jerry Collins at Ospreys, told BBC Radio Wales: "You kind of don't believe it.
"He brought a lot because he was still in his prime, it was great to play with someone like that, where if he was back in New Zealand he would have been an All-Black starter.
"He was a bit of a crazy guy but very very well-liked. Couldn't do enough for you, really. It's a massive shock to the whole rugby world."

From New Zealand to Barnstaple

In 2007, after New Zealand's exit from the World Cup, Jerry Collins went on holiday to Devon and ended up playing for amateur side Barnstaple's second XV.
Kevin Squire, ex-head coach at Barnstaple rugby, said: "I happened to bump into him in a cafe, I went over and said 'hi' looking for a selfie.
"I invited him down to the club, never expecting him to come, and two or three days later he was there. He did a training session with our under-13 side, after that session he asked if it would be possible for him to have a game the following day.
"I said 'there's no way you can play for us, you're not registered,' and he said 'I'm not on about the first team - the second team would do.'
"The next day he played for our second team. If you were to ask all the lads that played that day, they'll never forget the experience.
"In terms of the man himself, he was always so down to earth, the overriding vibe we got from the guy was what a terrific fella he was. I was so upset when I heard the news this morning. Everyone at Barnstaple rugby club will be devastated to hear the very sad news."

Former All-Blacks captain Sean Fitzpatrick, who coached Collins in the New Zealand Under-20s, told BBC Radio 5Live: "He was a player at the under-19s World Cup - a man in a boy's body at that age and he epitomised everything a rugby player should be.
"We say in the All Blacks that good men make great All Blacks. He was a very, very good man.
"Tough as old boots on the field, but off the field he'd be the nicest guy you'd meet. Its very, very sad news. He'll be remembered fondly. "
