Lord Elis-Thomas has represented the constituency of Dwyfor Meirionnydd since the start of the assembly and has been a loyal friend to Welsh Labour even when he was in Plaid Cymru.
His criticism of the party he once led got him into hot water on a couple of occasions, and a year ago he decided current leader Leanne Wood's band of assembly members were not close enough to government for him, so he quit.
Since then he has served the needs of the Welsh Government pretty much without question. But the question has always been what the former presiding officer is getting out of the arrangement.
Today, he has been rewarded with a job as a culture minister, serving as a junior to Economy Secretary Ken Skates.
There has always been the expectation that such an appointment could result in tensions with other backbenchers.
Could Mr Jones' promotion of Eluned Morgan, Huw Irranca-Davies and Jeremy Miles - the latter of whom is getting a cabinet-level job - ease Lord Elis-Thomas' entry to the government?

How much will they earn?
The new faces to Carwyn Jones' cabinet will also see their pay boosted as they take on their new roles.
Following a pay hike, cabinet secretaries earn £102,100 while ministers - their juniors - earn £86,785.
This compares to their £65,344 assembly member salary.

First Minister Carwyn Jones has unveiled his new cabinet, saying it has a "balance of experience and stability, with new drive and energy".
The cabinet includes a number of new deputy positions, with new blood being brought in.
It also sees a role created for former Plaid Cymru leader Lord Dafydd Elis Thomas, who quit the party in October 2016 to sit as an independent in the Senedd.
It means the Welsh Labour Government now has two non-Labour cabinet members.
On announcing his new team, Mr Jones said: "This strong team will drive forward our ambitious plans for Wales - focusing on growing the Welsh economy, creating jobs, supporting our public services and improving the day-to-day lives of the people of Wales."

Who could be in line for a new job?
The 2016 Senedd elections saw a whole row of new faces join the Labour backbench - including experienced politicians who have served in Westminster.
Eluned Morgan, 50,was the youngest MEP when she was elected in to the European Parliament in 1994. She served until 2009, before being appointed the house of lords in 2010 where she served a shadow minister for foreign affairs.
Elected to represent the sprawling assembly region of Mid and West Wales, the AM has been busy calling for the Welsh Government to develop an economic development plan for rural areas.
Huw Irranca-Davies, 54, represented Ogmore in the House of Commons between 2002-16, before switching to the assembly.
He is the only backbench Labour AM with ministerial experience, having been a Minister at DEFRA and the Wales Office while Gordon Brown was Prime Minister.
Both have been rumoured as potential beneficiaries of this afternoon's reshuffle.

Carl Sargeant: Who is he?
Carl Sargeant has had his fair share of roles and memorable moments since he was first elected as a Labour AM in 2003.
The Alyn and Deeside AM has held a number of positions in the Welsh cabinet including the social justice, local government and environment portfolios, before being appointed secretary for communities and children after the assembly election last year.
Mr Sargeant has also been the Labour group’s chief whip and his biography on the assembly website says he is "tireless campaigner against domestic abuse".
Before being elected, Mr Sargeant worked at a chemical manufacturing plant and was a quality and environmental auditor and industrial firefighter.

The reshuffle story so far

There were a few suggestions of the potential runners and riders in Carwyn Jones' reshuffle before news broke this Friday afternoon.
We had expected that some long-standing figures in the Welsh Government would be leaving their ministerial roles behind, and there had been speculation for ages that Carl Sargeant would be someone Mr Jones may want to eject to leave room for one of the 2016 election Labour intake.
But he has become the latest UK politician to be hit with allegations about their conduct, and he is the first AM to lose their job as a result.
In contrast Jane Hutt, the UK's longest serving minister, is leaving to an array of thanks and tributes from AMs.
