  2. Minister 'concerned' people not seeking medical helppublished at 12:59 British Summer Time 28 April 2020

“Avoidable harm and avoidable deaths” have taken place because people are not coming forward with urgent care needs, according to Health Minister Vaughan Gething.

He said the Welsh NHS is not seeing the numbers it would expect of cardiac arrests and strokes in the last month.

Speaking at the daily Welsh Government press conference, Mr Gething repeated reassurances that the NHS "is still open and available for people with urgent care needs".

"I’m particularly concerned that some people are already deciding not to come in, even if they have urgent care needs," he added.

Mr Gething said he had asked NHS chief executives to begin planning for how the service will work as the lockdown restrictions are eased.

This could include having “streams of non-Covid patients” on the same site as coronavirus patients, or sites where no Covid-19 positive patients will go. He said plans are being worked through.

"It is the first of two flights expected this week, which will help to replenish our stocks of gowns in Wales," Mr Gething said.

"We are expecting another flight from China later this week with a further 460,000 gowns".

A shipment of 10 million masks arrived from China on Saturday.

Speaking at the Welsh Government's daily press conference, Mr Gething said he had taken part in this morning's minute’s silence to mark International Workers’ Memorial Day to "honour all those who have died during the coronavirus pandemic but particularly those who have died while caring for others".

He said it was also a chance to pay respect to all the health and care workers throughout Wales who are caring for people.

Mr Gething said front-line workers were being asked to "go above and beyond to deliver care and services during these extraordinary times".

He said the Welsh Government had set up a "special scheme to provide financial support to the eligible beneficiaries of front-line staff, particularly those working in the NHS and social care, if they die in service as a result of being affected by coronavirus".

"A one-off sum of £60,000 will be available. That is additional too and not instead of any other pension agreements," Mr Gething added.

"This will never be able to fill the void left when someone dies. However I hope this will go some way to offer peace of mind and financial security for their loved ones."

  8. Olympics would be 'scrapped' rather than delayed againpublished at 12:34 British Summer Time 28 April 2020

The postponed Tokyo Olympics will be "scrapped" if they cannot take place in 2021, says Games chief Yoshiro Mori.

Tokyo 2020 is now scheduled to run from 23 July to 8 August next year after being delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Health experts have cast doubt on whether the Games could be held next summer without a vaccine or effective drugs to treat Covid-19 being found.

When asked if the event could be moved again to 2022, Mori replied: "No."

"In that case, the Olympics will be scrapped," he added.

NRW team leader Vanessa Lang said: “We remain determined to prevent illegal and reckless behaviour by a small minority that damage our native fish stocks and natural environment.

  19. Researchers develop new ambulance cleaning systempublished at 10:40 British Summer Time 28 April 2020

An innovative system to speed-clean ambulances used to transport patients with coronavirus has been developed by scientists in less than two weeks.

Cleaning the vehicles by hand can take 45 minutes and is potentially dangerous to workers.

Now Swansea University researchers have developed a new system which could cut that to less than 20 minutes.

Chedly Tizaoui said the technology could be used to decontaminate hospitals and schools.

The new system, using rapid release gases to penetrate all areas of the vehicle, has been developed by researchers from the university's College of Engineering.
