  12. 'Still time to save care home lives'published at 15:07 British Summer Time 5 May 2020

The Older People’s Commissioner for Wales says there is “still time to save lives in our care homes”.

Following the release of the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), Heléna Herklots says it is “quite simply a tragedy” that around one in five Covid-19 deaths have happened in care homes.

“It’s important to remember that these figures represent the heartbreak and loss being felt by families and friends throughout Wales, and my heart goes out to those who have lost loved ones,” she added.

“With the right action, there is still time to save lives in our care homes.

“It is crucial that the new measures recently announced by the Welsh Government are implemented immediately and effectively, and that testing is further extended so it is available to all care homes in Wales, to provide those living and working in care homes with the protection and support they need.”

  13. Mass testing earlier 'would have been beneficial'published at 14:54 British Summer Time 5 May 2020

It would have been "beneficial" to have ramped up Covid-19 testing more quickly, the UK's chief scientific adviser has told MPs.

But Sir Patrick Vallance also told the Commons Health Select Committee that testing alone would not control the virus.

The UK moved away from community tests and contact tracing on 12 March.

England's deputy chief medical officer Jenny Harries said "things would have been done differently" if test capacity had not been limited at the time.

Instead of community testing, ministers decided to focus testing on patients with suspected Covid-19 in hospitals or those in settings like care homes and prisons.

  15. Support for Covid-19 app 'if issues are resolved'published at 14:43 British Summer Time 5 May 2020

Health Minister Vaughan Gething said the Welsh Government would want to use an app to track and trace coronavirus currently being trialled on the Isle of Wight if certain issues can be resolved.

He told today’s news conference he had raised concerns in meetings with ministers from across the UK "about data, its privacy, its management, who owns it, to make sure we're not having a central data storage, that is going to be used for alternative purposes".

"You'll have heard that the data should be stored on an individual's phone, and it's then how it's used after that, and the consent people need to give for that data to be used," Mr Gething added.

He said Welsh ministers would have to make sure the app "provides information and data into the Welsh NHS to make sure we're not having data that isn't usable".

"If those issues can be overcome, then of course, you'd have to ask why on earth wouldn't Wales want to be part of that," he added.

  16. Police aim to stop illegal ravespublished at 14:30 British Summer Time 5 May 2020

Police are urging people in mid and west Wales to help them stop illegal raves.

Operation Flamenco involves an appeal to farmers, landowners and residents of rural communities to report suspicious activity to Dyfed-Powys Police.

Supt Jon Cummins said: “We know raves can cause anxiety to the community they are held in, and if not dealt with swiftly are difficult to stop due to the sheer numbers of people involved.

“There is also a safety concern involved in breaking up such events. And as we’re currently faced with the coronavirus health crisis, it is absolutely crucial that these types of gatherings do not take place.”

Phil Morgan, of Natural Resources Wales, said: “During this time of government lockdown, there really should be no one contemplating running or even attending an illegal rave.

“However, we are putting special measures in place over the bank holiday weekend to make sure all Natural Resources Wales sites are secure, making it as difficult as possible for anyone wanting to disobey the law.”

  17. Sewage study could predict second Covid-19 peakpublished at 14:22 British Summer Time 5 May 2020

Analysing sewage could help scientists predict a second peak of Covid-19 up to two weeks before people become symptomatic.

A team from Bangor University has been looking at samples from water treatment works across Wales in a bid to trace how many people have been infected.

They previously tracked norovirus through the sewage system.
