Monmouthshire council leader Peter Fox is elected in the Monmouth constituency for the Conservatives.

The seat has been by the Tories since the start of devolution, with current MP for the area David Davies sitting in it first, then Nick Ramsay taking over in 2007.

However, members in the Monmouth Conservative Association decided to deselect Mr Ramsay after relations between the MS and the local party deteriorated during 2020.

He stood as an independent but recorded 1,293 votes, with Mr Fox taking the seat with 15,332.

  4. 'Astonishing, resilient performance by Labour'published at 18:51 British Summer Time 7 May 2021

Roger Awan-Scully, head of politics and international relations at Cardiff University, said: "I think it's been an astonishing, resilient performance by the Welsh Labour Party, amidst disasters for Labour elsewhere in the UK.

"The Conservatives are also performing strongly, but not quite bringing it home in terms of the number of constituency victories that they might have expected.

"I think for the Conservatives it's going to be really crucial later today and perhaps into tomorrow - can they see in their regional list vote the same strength they've seen in the constituencies?

"For Plaid Cymru I think this has to be said to be a deeply disappointing election."

Labour 'marginally holding their own'published at 18:28 British Summer Time 7 May 2021

    Professor Sir John Curtice
    Polling expert

So far, on average Labour are marginally holding their own in Wales (down 0.5) as compared with the outcome of the 2019 general election, while the Conservatives are as much as 10 points down.

Plaid - who always do better in Senedd elections than Westminster - are as much as 12 points up on their 2019 position.

It isn't possible to argue that Mark Drakeford has done particularly better than Labour did in Wales at the last general election, but he is benefiting from a sharp decline in the Conservative vote as compared with 2019 - in sharp contrast with the Hartlepool by-election.

  12. Tories expecting to gain Brecon and Radnorshirepublished at 18:12 British Summer Time 7 May 2021

    David Deans
    BBC Wales politics reporter

A Welsh Conservative source say the party is expecting to gain Brecon and Radnorshire from the Lib Dems.

The seat was held by former Welsh Lib Dem leader Kirsty Williams until she stood down at the election.

It could be the Conservatives' second gain of the day, after the Vale of Clwyd.

The source said they believed it would be an "easy win".

  13. 'Mountain to climb' for Labourpublished at 18:03 British Summer Time 7 May 2021

Vaughan Gething says Labour still has a "mountain to climb" but the party has led a "positive campaign".

Adding he was disappointed about losing Vale of Clwyd to the Tories, the health minister added: "We really need to see all of those very tight competitive results to really understand the message the people of wales have given on the shape of the next Senedd."

The health minister in the last goverment said the party needed to see what happened in the Rhondda and Llanelli, between Plaid and Labour, and the Tory marginals, the Vale of Glamorgan included.

"We need to see all of those before we start speculating about the shape of the next government," he added.

"During the campaign we have gone from the Tories starting off in the best position possible, to us then gaining ground, largely because of leadership in the pandemic, and the way the people of Wales felt about the Welsh government, our choices and our honesty in leading Wales through this extraordinary period of time... that's why I think we have seen a turnaround."

Mabon ap Gwynfor has won the Dwyfor Meirionnydd seat for Plaid Cymru.

Lord Elis-Thomas won it for the party in 2016, before switching to become an independent in the same year.

The former leader said it was because the party was not "serious" about taking part in the Labour-led Welsh government.

He said supporters of devolution should be working together to ensure Wales did not lose powers.

Lord Elis-Thomas later took a role as minister for culture, tourism and sport.

The last brick in the wallpublished at 17:44 British Summer Time 7 May 2021

    Felicity Evans
    BBC Wales political editor

Labour's win in Alyn and Deeside represents the last of the red wall seats that the Conservatives had hoped to take.

It's the last brick in the wall.

But they have only managed in this election to take Vale of Clwyd - by a small amount.

So it counts as a disappointing set of results for the Conservatives.
