Mark Drakeford said all alert level two measures would come into force from 06:00 GMT on Boxing Day, 26 December.

Weddings, civil partnerships, funerals and wakes will not be subject to the same limits as other indoor or outdoor events.

But Mark Drakeford said the numbers that could attend would be determined by the ability of the venue to manage social distancing and other reasonable measures.

All guests will need to take a lateral flow test.

  2. Omicron cases risen 'sharply'published at 12:24 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2021

Mark Drakeford said the number of confirmed Omicron cases “has risen sharply”.

“We are also seeing a rapid rise in the overall rates of the virus across Wales," he said.

“We expect this trend to continue and to accelerate. Omicron is here in Wales and is now spreading quickly.”

  3. Self-isolation changespublished at 12:23 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2021

Close contacts of people who have Covid will no-longer have to self-isolate provided they have been fully vaccinated, Mark Drakeford has said.

They will now have to take a lateral-flow test (LFT) instead.

Mr Drakeford has not gone as far as England, where people with Covid will now have to self-isolate for seven days instead of 10, providing they have a negative test result.

“People who have daily negative tests will be able to continue going to work as normal, while following all the steps to keep themselves safe, including limiting the number of people they mix with as much as possible,” he said.

“If you have not been double-vaccinated and are identified as a close contact of someone who has Covid you must self-isolate.”

He said ministers were considering advice from scientists on possible changes to self-isolation arrangements for those who have Covid, as has now happened in England.

A maximum of six people will be allowed to meet in pubs, cinemas and restaurants in Wales from 26 December, the first minister has announced.

And two metres social distancing rules are to return in public places, Mark Drakeford said.

Licensed premises will have to offer table service only, face masks will have to be worn and contact tracing details collected.

Outdoor events will be limited to 50, with 30 indoors.

Advice has been given to limit household mixing and use lateral flow tests beforehand, with a specific offence for having gatherings of more than 30 people.

Schools will have two days at the start of the new term in January to plan for pupils' return and the possibility of moving to remote learning.

It means pupils in some schools will return to class later than planned after the Christmas break.

A letter from Education Minister Jeremy Miles calls on head teachers to plan for some classes, year groups or the whole school to move online.

One head teachers' union welcomed the announcement, but another criticised the move.

The Welsh government has already announced a number of restrictions which will be introduced after Christmas, with the hope to protect the NHS from becoming overwhelmed.

    They include:

    • Nightclubs will close from 27 December
    • Social distancing will be required in places of work and places open to the public
    • Spectators will be banned from sports events from 26 December
    • Fines will be handed out to employees in Wales who go to work when they could work from home
  8. Which restrictions could Wales face next?published at 11:56 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2021

Mark Drakeford has described the Omicron wave as both a "tsunami" and a "storm" heading our way.

Many expected the government to go further at last week's review - a review which has changed from every three weeks to weekly in response to the new variant.

We do not know for certain, but there is a big list of things ministers could choose from today:

    • Household bubbles or the rule of six indoors may be back on the horizon
    • Social distancing and compulsory contact tracing
    • Table service could be reintroduced in pubs and restaurants

But a full lockdown seems unlikely.
