Christine has been a councillor since 1988 and Elaine since 2000, both only losing their seat in 2008.

Elaine said: “I’m emotional because I didn’t want to lose the job I love and I want to keep helping people, I haven’t slept for three days and I’ve increased my majority since the last election from nine to a majority of about 50 so it shows we still have to go out there and work hard which I’ll do.”

Christine said: “It’s fabulous working together and we work a good team because Elaine is good with technology so picks up cases on social media and then passes them onto me and I sort them out."

  11. Tories fall from first to fourth in Denbighshirepublished at 15:46 British Summer Time 6 May 2022

    Daniel Davies
    BBC Wales political correspondent

Labour has emerged as the biggest party in Denbighshire, with the Conservatives plummeting from first to fourth place.

It’s a terrible result for the Tories, who fielded a candidate in every seat.

Boris Johnson visited a caravan park near Rhyl to drum up support during the campaign.

But some party representatives at the count blamed his government’s problems in Westminster for the poor showing.

The Tories had been part of an independent-led administration in Denbighshire.

These results could give Labour a chance to form a new coalition.

After losing the local Senedd and Westminster seats, local Labour campaigners said this election was “pivotal” to the party’s fightback in the area.

The tally of seats is: Labour 19, independents 12, Plaid Cymru eight, Conservatives six, Greens two, Liberal Democrats one

People have objected to a planned waste processing plant in Cwmfelinfach

The Labour leader in Caerphilly losing her seat by almost 1,000 votes could be due to a local planning issue.

Caerphilly Member of the Senedd, Hefin David, and Caerphilly MP Wayne David say they believe Philippa Marsden's loss is as a result of issues surrounding a new waste plant in Cwmfelinfach.

Planning permission has been granted for the plant, but people in the area are opposed to it.

“She knew that she was going to lose that election but all the way through she fought it and was very brave," said Hefin David.

Wayne David added: “Philippa was a good leader, particularly in the Covid crisis, but it was a big issue in her local area and clearly people felt very strongly about it.”

  19. 'I wasn’t sure voting was going on'published at 14:45 British Summer Time 6 May 2022

Manav, Jordan, Ethan and Brandon are all 17, but only Manav voted yesterday.

Yesterday was the first time 16 and 17-year-olds could vote in council elections in Wales.

Manav said: “I have the right to vote and feel like everyone can make a change so why wouldn’t I use that. I think it’s a good thing young people can vote, they are voting for their future.”

Ethan said: “I don’t think it’s accessible enough for people our age. I think it would be better for it to be on devices where we could do it - our age are not going to want to go to the polling station, it would be a lot easier for it to be on a phone.”

Brandon added: “ I wasn’t sure that there was even voting going on.”

Defeated Conservative Anton Sampson, who’s been a Prestatyn East councillor for 14 years, says he thinks there’s a “strong chance” that the unpopularity of Boris Johnson cost him his seat.

“We do all the footwork but we are the ones who get punished," he said.

The former leader of Monmouthshire council Peter Fox, who is now a Member of the Senedd, has described "concern about what has been going on at the end of the M4" making the Conservatives' job difficult at a local level.

He said, when he was campaigning on the doorstep in these local elections, the issued raised "weren't all about Boris", but added "there was concern about some of the things that have gone on".

"I think he's given a strong leadership through the pandemic... you know, nobody's perfect, I've got I've got things I do wrong," Mr Fox added.
