Stabbed woman was victim of 'targeted attack'
A woman stabbed in a "targeted attack" remains in hospital following the arrest of a man on suspicion of attempted murder, police have said.
At a police press conference, Ch Insp Rob Miles said officers were called just before 09:10 GMT following reports a woman had been stabbed in Moy Road, in Aberfan.
He said: "The suspect left the scene immediately and armed officers have been carrying out inquiries throughout the day to trace him.
"This afternoon a 28-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
"The man is known to the victim and is currently in police custody.
"Local schools activated their lockdown protocols to keep pupils safe.
"Neighbourhood officers have been in the area to ensure pupils have been able to leave the school safely at the normal time.
"This was done as a precaution and schools will reopen tomorrow as normal.
"This was a targeted attack. The woman remains in hospital with injuries which are not believed to be life threatening at this time.
"I want to thank the local community and partners for their patience and support throughout today's police operation to trace and arrest the suspect."

Moment armed police arrive in village
Armed police were seen in the village of Troedyrhiw, which is about 1.5 miles away from Moy Road, Aberfan, where a pregnant woman, 29 was stabbed earlier.
A man, 28, from Merthyr Tydfil, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
Witness Kaylee Organ said there were numerous officers "with big guns" on Wyndham Street, Troedyrhiw.
There were, she said, "loads" of police cars.
"I thought maybe they were just looking out for the children walking home from school," Ms Organ said.
"As I was going back into the property, I could see a man handcuffed with a blue hooded jacket with its hood up.
"The police didn't say anything. They took him and left.
"It's gone back to normal now, very quiet."

As the light begins to fade on a winter’s day in Aberfan, residents in Moy Road and Coronation Place are reflecting on the day’s events.
This close-knit valleys community didn’t expect to be dealing with such a large police - and media - presence today.
Time and again local residents have expressed their shock at what happened just after 09:00 GMT this morning, along with their hope the female victim - who neighbours say hadn’t long lived in the village - will be OK.

A man, 28, from Merthyr Tydfil, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, police say.
Officers investigating the stabbing on Moy Road, Aberfan, arrested him and he is currently in custody.

'I've never known anything like this'
Marilyn Morris has lived on the road where the attack happened for 50 years and says she has "not known anything like this".

didn’t know what was going on and then my daughter rang me and said: 'Mam you OK?'

Wales' first minister sends his thoughts to victim
Senior politicians speaking in Wales' Senedd have expressed concern about this morning's events.
First Minister Mark Drakeford said: "Events continue to unfold and I think for the moment our thoughts are with people caught up in them".
Welsh Conservative Senedd leader Andrew RT Davies said: "I'm sure everyone's thoughts are with that community and those involved in trying to restore the situation."
Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth also expressed his concern for the community and thanked all those who had taken part in the emergency response.
Stabbing victim 'ran and fell to the floor'
Another eyewitness saw the pregnant woman run towards her and then fall to the floor.
Kira Terrett was walking her dog near her home in Aberfan when she witnessed the incident, her mother Lynne told the PA news agency.
"My daughter screamed and people came out from everywhere," she said.
Lynne added that after the woman was stabbed, her attacker ran off.
She added that her daughter was "very shook up" following the incident.
'She was really brave'
Witness Katie Roberts has told the BBC the woman who was stabbed was "really brave" and "in shock".
"I hope that her and her baby are OK," she said.

School lockdown lifted
Nearby Greenfield School says it is no longer in lockdown.
The school earlier issued a statement to parents saying that it was keeping the pupils safe inside the building and all perimeter gates had been locked.
