There are 60 members of the Senedd that will help install their new first minister this afternoon

Members of the Senedd (MS) are due to nominate the new first minister in just under an hour - at about 13:30 GMT - this afternoon.

They will gather in the Chamber where the Llywydd - or the Presiding Officer - asks for nominations for first minister.

Labour will nominate Vaughan Gething, while the Conservatives and Plaid Cymru will nominate their own leaders.

There is then a roll-call vote of Senedd members, with each politician asked in alphabetical order to say who they support.

Short of a some kind of unexpected major political shock, Labour have the numbers to confirm Gething.

Once Gething his name will go to the King for approval, who will then respond and he can then be sworn in.

Vaughan Gething was Wales' health minister during the Covid pandemic

Vaughan Gething is making history, becoming the first black man to be elected Welsh Labour leader and subsequently becoming Wales' first minister.

His victory over Jeremy Miles follows a career in Welsh government that saw him take charge of the Welsh NHS's response to Covid.

The 50-year-old father-of-one's journey to the frontline of politics began in southern Africa in 1974, when he was born in the capital of Zambia, Lusaka.

His father, a vet from Ogmore-by-Sea, a seaside village near the south Wales town of Bridgend, had moved there to work and had met Gething's mum.
