Quote MessageI will not be attending the royal opening of the National Assembly for Wales as I have a full day of constituency work. As a committed republican, my first duty is always to my constituents, whose issues cannot be put off for what is ultimately a ceremonial event. The National Assembly is here to serve the people of Wales and that is what I shall be doing.
Bethan Jenkins, Plaid Cymru AM

The assembly's presiding officer hails the royal opening as a celebration of Wales
Quote MessageIt is important that the National Assembly for Wales is cemented as a focal point for Welsh civic, political and cultural life. That is why the official opening of the Assembly is such an important part of Welsh life. It is the state-opening of Wales’s parliament and that’s why we need to ensure that the occasion itself reflects that importance. It is also an opportunity for us to showcase and celebrate the talent that we have here in Wales, as we mark the beginning of the Fifth Assembly.
Elin Jones, Presiding Officer
