  1. A Labour stronghold - with low turnoutspublished at 22:04 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2018

The constituency of Alyn and Deeside has been held by Labour at the assembly since the first election in 1999.

At the last assembly election in 2016, Alyn and Deeside recorded the lowest turnout, with 34.6% of electors casting a vote. Turnout in the constituency is always among the lowest in Wales.

Geographically, it is one of the smallest constituencies in Wales, with the main population areas being the largely industrial Connah's Quay, Queensferry, Shotton, Buckley and Broughton.

The Alyn and Deeside by-election follows the death of Carl Sargeant last November.

The AM was fired from his cabinet job by First Minister Carwyn Jones after allegations emerged about inappropriate conduct towards a number of women.

They were referred to the Labour party for investigation, but days later the sacked minister was found dead in his home in Connah's Quay.

Questions were immediately asked about how the process was handled.

Mr Sargeant's family said he was denied "natural justice".

Two probes were triggered - one into the circumstances around Mr Sargeant's sacking, another into allegations of bullying in the Welsh Government in 2014.

It has been a tumultuous time in Welsh politics. The pressure on the Welsh Labour leader has been huge and unrelenting.

But with the two inquiries outstanding, it is unlikely tonight's result will bring that to an end.
