    UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will today hold an emergency Cobra meeting, which is expected to look into whether "social distancing" measures should be introduced.

    These could include banning of big events, closing schools and encouraging home working.

    It comes after a man in his 60s became the UK's third death linked to the Covid-19 virus. There are now 279 confirmed cases in the UK.

  2. Shanghai Disney resort partially reopenspublished at 07:06 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2020

    Although Disneyland in Shanghai will remain closed, parts of the wider resort are to re-open.

    The company said, external "a limited number of shopping, dining, and recreational experiences" would open as "as the first step of a phased reopening".

    The complex has been closed since January.

  3. Wuhan starts to shut down makeshift hospitalspublished at 07:01 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2020

    At least 11 of the 16 makeshift hospitals in the Chinese virus epicentre of Wuhan have been able to close, reported state media outlet Xinhua.

    The makeshift hospitals - in stadiums, schools, and elsewhere - treated patients who suffered from mild symptoms.

    It comes as the number of new coronavirus cases in China has steadily decreased - China reported its lowest number of cases so far on Monday.

  4. India turns away cruise ship with 1,400 peoplepublished at 06:56 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2020

    Indian authorities in the port city of Mangalore have turned away a cruise ship with 1,400 passengers that was due to dock there, an official confirmed to the BBC.

    The country's shipping ministry has issued an advisory that says no cruise ships from foreign countries can dock anywhere in India, as part of coronavirus preventive measures.

    The ship, identified as the MSC Lirica, is registered in the Republic of Panama.

    None of the passengers are believed to have any symptoms of coronavirus.

    India has around 40 confirmed cases of the virus so far.

    The Marshall Islands in the Pacific has banned all inbound air travellers for two weeks.

    Flights can still land, although passengers cannot disembark, said the government's Facebook announcement.

    Japan's Nikkei stock index has plunged below 20,000 for the first time since January 2019.

    It dropped 5.07% to close at 19,698.76.

  8. Italian prisoners revolt over virus rulespublished at 06:34 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2020

    Inmates in four Italian prisons have revolted over new rules meant to help contain the coronavirus, reported Reuters, quoting prison rights group Antigone.

    The introduction of the new rules - which include a ban on family visits - resulted in chaos across prisons in Naples Poggioreale, Modena, Frosinone and Alexandria.

    Antigone said at least one inmate had died in Modena - though it is not clear what happened.

    Several prison officers were injured as a result.

  9. Singapore to allow cruise ship to dockpublished at 06:29 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2020

    A cruise ship that was turned away from ports in Malaysia and Thailand over coronavirus fears will be allowed to dock in Singapore.

    The Costa Fortuna will dock on 10 March as scheduled, said Singapore authorities.

    No passengers are suffering from a fever or have any symptoms of respiratory illness.

    Local reports quoting Malaysian officials say there are around 64 Italians onboard.

    The ship departed from Singapore, its home port, on 3 March.

    Some Indian phone networks have begun playing recorded messages offering health advice to people when they try to make phone calls.

    The message, which is activated as soon as you dial a number, advises people to wash their hands frequently, avoid touching their faces, stay away from those who are sneezing and coughing, and asks them to go to a health centre if they show any symptoms.

    In the event of a major outbreak, India will face many challenges, says the BBC's Soutik Biswas. It would be near impossible for to force citizens into mass quarantine and hospitalise people in numbers like China.

  15. Chinese doctor dies of Covid-19published at 05:50 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2020

    Another Chinese doctor in the virus epicentre of Wuhan has died from the virus.

    Dr Zhu Heping was a colleague of Dr Li Wenliang - who tried to warn authorities about the virus but was accused of spreading misinformation.

    Dr Li later fell ill with the virus and passed away as a result.

    The number of confirmed US coronavirus cases has risen past 500, as the virus continues to spread across the country.

    At least 21 people have died.

    President Donald Trump earlier signed an $8.3bn emergency bill designed to combat the outbreak. He had urged calm, saying: "It'll go away."

    The death toll in Italy has jumped by 133 in just one day, making a total of 366 deaths in the country.

    The total number of infections also spiked by 25% to 7,375 from 5,883.

    This means Italy now has the highest number of confirmed infections outside China, where the virus emerged last December.

    A three-year-old child from the southern state of Kerala has become the 40th confirmed case of coronavirus in India.

    The child had travelled to Italy with his parents and had returned to the country last week. He had been admitted to hospital with his parents following a thermal check at the airport.

    Children can catch coronavirus - the youngest cases have been only hours old.

    But only 0.2% of children and teenagers with the virus have died so far, compared with nearly 15% of people over the age of 80.

    The downward trend has continued in South Korea - who reported 69 new cases, its lowest daily increase in 10 days.

    This brings the number of cases in South Korea to 7,382.

    The country's Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun expressed optimism, but warned that he was still "extremely cautious".

    "There's hope we can reach a turning point in the near future," he said.

  20. China reports lowest cases so farpublished at 05:29 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2020

    China reported 40 new cases of the coronavirus on Monday, its lowest number since its health commission began publishing nationwide data on 20 January.

    Of the 40 cases, 36 were from the virus epicentre of Wuhan - while the remaining four were cases imported from Iran.

    But one Chinese official warned that the country had to "stay cautious" - adding that the country "should not reduce the vigilance against the epidemic".
