Here are some of the biggest developments:
- France, Spain and Italy all recorded their highest death tolls for a single day. Italy saw 368 deaths bring its total to 1,809 - the highest outside of China. Spain recorded 97 more deaths for a total of 288, and France reported 29 deaths, bringing the national total to 120.
- The UK also saw a single-day record, with 14 new deaths and a total of 35. Health Minister Matt Hancock told the BBC that, "within weeks," people aged 70 or over are will be asked to self-isolate "for a very long time."
- The US has cut interest rates to almost zero and launched a $700bn stimulus programme in a bid to shore up its the economy.
- Germany and the Czech Republic will impose temporary controls on their borders to stop coronavirus spreading
- In neighbouring Austria, the government has banned gatherings of more the five people and ordered the closure of schools and shops
