An adviser to the Ukrainian defence minister has said there is "panic" in Russian ranks, but cautioned that the war was "far from over".

Yuriy Sak told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "We always believed that we would liberate Kherson.

"And we are confident that now Russians are beginning to believe that they will never be able to win this war.

"We see the panic in their ranks. We see the panic in their propaganda machine.

"But of course, this is a very important moment, but it is too early to relax... because this war is far from over."

  3. Ukrainian army winning on the battlefield and will prevail - Ukraine FMpublished at 09:05 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2022

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba - who's in Cambodia for the Asean summit - says the recapture of Kherson shows Russia is on the back foot, and will be defeated:

"This is yet another battle that we have won. I would like to remind you that since the beginning of the war, we won the battle for Kyiv, we forced Russia to retreat from the north-east of Ukraine, we won the battle for Kharkiv region, we won the battle for Kherson.

"So, we are winning battles on the ground, but the war continues. The morale in Ukraine is very high, our army will continue to liberate our territory, because we are fighting a defensive war against an enemy who invaded our country.

Ukrainian soldiers have been welcomed into Kherson by jubilant residents, after Russia said it had fully withdrawn from the key southern city.

Video showed locals on the streets, flying Ukraine's national flag and chanting as Kyiv's troops arrived. Some sang patriotic songs around a large camp fire well into the night.

There have also been celebrations around the country, including in Kyiv and Odesa.

The US has hailed Ukraine’s "extraordinary victory" in recapturing the city from the Russians. President Biden's national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, said the only regional capital that Moscow had been able to seize in this war was back under a Ukrainian flag.

Ukraine's President Volodymir Zelensky described the day as "historic", while Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has said the Ukrainians are winning the battles on the ground, but that the war continues.

Russia said its 30,000 troops had been redeployed to the eastern side of the Dnipro river, along with 5,000 pieces of military hardware, weaponry and other assets.
