Nearly 2,500 people have been evacuated from Corfu, a spokesman for the fire department has told AFP news agency.

  2. Nightmare weekend for wildfire volunteers on Rhodespublished at 07:44 British Summer Time 24 July 2023

A volunteer supporting emergency services battle wildfires in Rhodes has described the situation over the weekend as a "nightmare".

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Maria Feggou from the Hellenic Red Cross explains that multiple fires have been burning on the Greek island for more than five days.

She says her colleagues are organising supplies of food and water to support the firefighters battling the blazes.

Feggou describes the wildfires as among the most difficult she has ever experienced - even more extensive than severe blazes which broke out in the summer of 2021.

"This is worse because the fire fronts are larger and almost half of the island is burning," she adds.

  3. Power cuts and full-up hotels on Rhodespublished at 07:34 British Summer Time 24 July 2023

    Reporting from Rhodes

Many of those who fled the fires have spent an uncomfortable night in hot and crowded emergency accommodation, sleeping – if they were lucky – on mattresses in sports centres and schools.

It’s been very difficult to find hotels on the island – either because they’ve been evacuated or fully booked.

Some venues haven’t had running water overnight and there’ve been power cuts too; the state electricity company has warned there will be alternating power outages on the island after a power station was shut down due to fire near the high-voltage network.

  4. Can tourists get money back if they leave early?published at 07:26 British Summer Time 24 July 2023

BBC Breakfast has been talking to travel expert Simon Calder about what holidaymakers (like some of the people seen in our video below) can do in such extreme weather events.

Asked what options are available for people stuck in Greece, Calder says clearly people can make their own moves to return - especially if they've had a horrible ordeal and would just like to come home.

He says if someone is in "pretty extreme circumstances" and needs to get back, they should be able to claim the costs on travel insurance.

However, for anyone who shortens their holiday because it's not a very pleasant experience or are concerned about being trapped, that'll be considered "disinclination to travel", meaning they not necessarily be eligible for much money back, Calder warns.

Giving the hypothetical example of someone on two-week package holiday reduced to a week because of evacuation, Calder says they are eligible for at least some of their money back

Although it would not be half in this example - as travel firms are by law allowed to subtract the cost of your flight, the journalist adds.

  6. Island of Evia also evacuatedpublished at 07:08 British Summer Time 24 July 2023

Parts of the island of Evia, located off central Greece's eastern coast, have also been issued with evacuation orders.

Residents in four villages - Livadi, Potami, Pernaraki and Platanisto - have been told to evacuate for precautionary measures and move towards the area of Karystos, the state news agency ANA-MPA reports.

  7. Corfu evacuating residents by seapublished at 07:00 British Summer Time 24 July 2023

As we mentioned in our opening post, Corfu issued an evacuation order late on Sunday as a result of fires of its own.

People in the areas of Santa, Megoula, Porta, Palia, Perithia and Sinies on the island have been told to evacuate.

Boats in the area were dispatched to evacuate residents by sea, a government official said.

Corfu - in the Ionian Sea to the north-west of the Greek mainland - is a destination popular with tourists, with hundreds of thousands Brits visiting every year.

Rhodes has been battling fires fanned by strong winds since Tuesday and roughly 19,000 people have so far been evacuated.

This represents the largest evacuation from wildfires in Greece, according to the government.

Some British holidaymakers arriving on the island on Saturday found their hotel had already been evacuated.

Planes are now on their way to collect stranded British tourists, as we mentioned in our post below.

  9. What are airlines doing about Rhodes?published at 06:51 British Summer Time 24 July 2023

Airlines and travel companies are scrambling to bring customers home from Rhodes, as wildfires rage across the Greek holiday destination.

Here's what five of the biggest holiday firms have said so far:

    • EasyJet announced it would operate two rescue flights with a total of 421 seats today, and a third on Tuesday, in addition to its nine scheduled flights between Rhodes and the UK
    • Jet2 has cancelled all flights and holidays due to depart to the island in the next seven days, but aircraft with no customers on board will be flown there in order to bring people back
    • British Airways said its flights to Rhodes were running as normal, but customers needing to return early could change their flight for free, and those not wishing to travel there in the next week from the UK could postpone their flight
    • Tour operator Thomas Cook said it had cancelled some holidays to affected areas, with full refunds offered. It added some customers booked to travel to other parts on Monday and Tuesday were being contacted with the option to cancel and be refunded if they wished
    • Tui has cancelled all its flights to the island until Wednesday, but customers currently in Rhodes will return on their intended flights home

  10. Corfu joins Rhodes in evacuating over wildfirespublished at 06:47 British Summer Time 24 July 2023

Good morning and welcome to today’s coverage of the devastating wildfires in Greece.

Corfu has become the latest island to issue an evacuation order after a blaze broke out in the north – an area popular with British tourists.

It comes after some 19,000 people were evacuated on the island of Rhodes, which has also been hit by fires.

This has left many holidaymakers in limbo, sleeping in makeshift conditions and awaiting flights home.

We’ll be updating you this morning on the blazes themselves – and what this all means for those visiting the islands.

Following the latest developments this morning are Adam Durbin, James Gregory and me.
